Hi I'm on the way to get a new cheap cell phone for my husband. He does not text or go on line only wants it for calling. Will a 3g phone with public mobile?

3g is actually a requirement for your phone calls Since you won't be using text mesaging or data, LTE won't be used for your normal uaage. However a phone that can't connect to Public's Mobile's LTE will not be able to receive emergency alerts through the official system.

PM uses Telus and Bell towers which are 4G but throttles speeds to 3G. Most phones should be 3G/4G capable but make sure it is unlocked. You can also check willmyphonework.net.

Yes, a 3 G phone would work but it need the necessary 3G bands. Which model of phone?
Public Mobile uses the following frequency bands:
- 4G LTE and LTE Advanced: 700 MHz, 850 MHz, 1900 MHz and 2100 MHz downlink and 1700 MHz uplink (AWS). band 12, band 5, band 2, band 1, band 4
- HSPA: 850 MHz, 1900 MHz (UMTS). - 3G bands
You can check the phone compatitibilty checker on PM website
