I am.a recent arriver at PM (from fido) and I am appreciating the simplicity and transparency of the service and systems.
So I am.curious as to why parent Telus is sending promo texts encouraging PM people to switch to Koodo ($55 for 6Gb).
What's up with that?

Don’t be enticed by their $30 kick back – They are not suggesting PM users to switch just because they are good people.

Will disagree that it's a monopoly - cell plan prices have dramatically decreased during the past couple of years and are now close to par with plans in Europe. A low priced $8 CA ( less the $6 US )cell plan like Public Mobile's was unimaginable a few years ago.

In a monopoly, the way to compete is to copy each other. It is not about flattering each other either. It is all about avoiding a price war spiral.

Right on! I have kept my $15 BELL prepaid plan which gives me unlimited Picture and Video messaging and in addition 200 free local loyalty minutes but has very expensive .50 cents a minure long distance voice and NO roll over feature. ------- Most users today hardly use their voice feature ( but good to have) and just text and send pictures, emails etc. BUT in my case the very affordable $10 or $8 with auto top or even less with the Community Rewards PM plan is the way to go because of the roll over feature of Data and Long Distance voice.------- I use my BELL SIM in my new iPhone and PM SIM in my old iPhone which I keep in my car.

No, I'm well aware that PM and Koodo are both Telus sub brands.
But the cross promotion stills strikes me as strange.
Yes I also find it strange which leads me to suspect that TELUS eventually plans to scrap PM.

Pretty good offers though, almost tempting

The Koodo offers are actually getting better and better too. Seems like Telus really wants us to switch over..

@pjstock and of course managing multiple lines (say for your spouse, children, elderly parents etc) is more cumbersome at PM due to the single-account-and-email-per-phone-line set up, whereas with Koodo you can have multiple lines under a single account as needed.

@pjstock the two brands (PM and Koodo--post-paid as all these offers are to post-paid) do offer different things to folks. PM generally offers the lowest cost at the expense of features (contact centre, retail kiosks, VoLTE/VoWiFi*, visual voicemail, roaming outside of the USA, ability to purchase phones on a tab, etc etc) whereas Koodo offers those features. There is some give and take as @will13am recently pointed out, where PM's US roaming options may present better value under some circumstances, and PM offers complimentary call forwarding whereas Koodo charges, etc. But in general, PM is simple but value focused, whereas Koodo is more fully-featured. Which of these things are the most important factors to you will probably form a large portion of your decision of which brand to support.
* VoLTE and VoWiFi are still quite new at Koodo and only available on limited phone models at the moment, and mostly only ones sold directly by them. But, at least it's an option given the "correct" hardware.

Many of us don't fully understand the marketing strategy. The people who occupy the corner offices and get paid the big bucks to strategized this kind of stuff have this notion that it is in the interest of Telus to woo customers from Public Mobile over to Koodo. Public Mobile is the value brand and is seen as a good entry point for customers. They run this brand to bring the customers in with value offerings. If is obvious those who do get this service are attracted to value. The value label on the Koodo brand is not so evident as compare to Public Mobile. This is where I think the questions start to fly. We have landed right where the value is and now why on earth would anyone ask us to move to a product that doesn't seem to have as good of a fit? It is a bit of work, but it is possible to extract comparable value from the Koodo brand. I have got my thumb in both pies. They are different but can be made to work. Actually the best mix is to have both services. Then you can leverage the strengths of both services.

As a recent arriver I am not sure if you know that PM is owned by Telus which also owns Koodo. Lately their have be offers targeted at select plans to migrate to Koodo. Some members like the offers and will move up "the food chain" others don't. Koodo you still have call centres and stores and can subsidize phones and some people really do want that and didn't realize how much they needed that until they came to PM. For others it is no big deal and like the less for less
