I'm sure this may have been discussed in the past, but I've noticed in certain areas such as my work I have very poor/no signal (within downtown Kitchener), rendering my phone unusable.

While I have wifi at work, it would be great if there was a way to connect to the wifi when there is no cell signal and be able to make/receive calls and send/receive messages on public mobile via wifi.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S5, and I know it is an option with other carries and even other phones such as the iPhone, so would love to see it as a possibility with public mobile.

Hi @esaad86,

I'd love to see that too, but at this time, Public Mobile doesn't offer Wi-Fi calling nor does Telus, the parent company.

Hi @esaad86

I believe you can complain the signal issue in your area. Report to Telus.

For wifi calling... apparently Telus is working on an app for both iOS and Android called TELUS Extend that will allow for wifi calling. Not sure if it'll work for Public Mobile or not, but looks like the feature is coming.

The app in beta right now, and you need to be invited to download it, but here's the link anyway to the support page:

Credit goes to @deltatux for mentioning this app back in 2015!

As a former Telus postpaid customer (corp grandfathered plan), I can tell you that they did not make Telus Extend available to this group. (In fact, through some sort of error it became available although I hadn't received an app invite, but a day later Telus reversed this, taking Telus Extend away.) It was a great app for the brief time I was able to use it. With that said, it became clear to me that it was only ever going to be available for their customers with new, expensive plans.

WiFi-calling definitely helps when cell signal is low (e.g. a basement, certain buildings).

VoLTE isn't exactly required for WiFi calling. After all, the point of WiFi calling is instances with weak cell signal...so the type of signal isn't a roadblock.

However, VoLTE is related, to perform call hand-off when leaving WiFi range. If Telus thinks call hand-off is vital, then VoLTE has to available first...and Telus doesn't have that...yet.

Here's hoping Telus either decides that WiFi calling without call hand-off is OK, or that they finally roll out VoLTE (like Bell and Rogers). Then WiFi calling becomes a possibility.
