I suspect one of the hurdles for the less tech saavy users looking to join PM is the APN setup. So it makes sense that the guide should be up to date.

The APN setup guide here mentions you need to configure your APN settings manually but it's actually not required for more modern phones as they will read the details in the SIM and configure it automatically. Perhaps the APN guide should be tweaked slightly.

That's not completely true. Had to manually update the APN setting on my OnePlus One running Android 5.1.1. It only picked up 90% of the correct APN settings, had to modify it a bit to get data working so having these instructions are handy.

I'm not saying remove the APN instructions. I'm recommending that we update the instructions to indicate that manually setting APN settings is not always required. It wasn't for me and it also wasn't for other users. I know it confused me a bit since mine we're already setup automatically and I wasn't sure if I should change them to match the instructions exactly. The instructions are a year old and some of text of the APN settings on the Android OS have been updated slightly.

Hello @spmckinnon

Usually, if APN settings get downloaded automatically, everything works and the person doesn't really look for how to set them up manually.

Its only when the person has trouble with data or MMS that they will search the forum and find the APN setup guide.

Also, as @deltatux said above, many of the new smartphones do require manual setup of the APN.  It depends on various things.. such as where the phone is originally from, as in country or carrier.. which rom/OS version/customizations are on it etc etc.

Those are good points but when I received my SIM card the instructions in their said to insert SIM and then go to the knowledge base for instructions on how to configure the APN settings.

I see.  Thanks for pointing that out.  It wouldn't hurt to revise those instructions to say something along the lines of.. "If data and MMS work properly on your phone, you are done.  If not, go to the knowledge base for instructions"

I think PM may have done this to be sure that everyone verifies their APN settings to avoid any potential issues.
