Recently, a customer complained of being provided inaccurate information from the IMEI checker.  It is suggested that this be taken offline and checked out for accuracy before putting it back it service.  Providing inaccurate information is worse than not providing any.  The negative publicity/word of mouth is very damaging.

Thanks so much for posting this, @will13am!

For reference, here is the thread Will mentioned:

http://productioncommunity.publicmobile.ca/t5/Phones-Hardware/Re-Phone-showin-quot-No-service-quot/m...

This is not the first incident, and unless addressed, it will not be the last.  This does need to be addressed, @Jeremy_M!

There is another option available to Public Mobile as an IMEI checker. We are currently investigating it and it's implementation.

@David_J glad to hear it!  Looking forward to an update down the road.  Thanks for following up!

Complete removal doesn't make sense.  As a consumer, I want to find the information as easy as I can, and with the increasing number frequencies and the varied use of them, seeing if your device will or will not work is nearly impossible.

Even retailers and/or manufacturers can't get it right on the model number on webpages.

im still waiting for ASUS to respond to my question about their stated specs, and the different specs listed by NestBuy Canada on each website.

This is something that needs to be simplified by the industry, governments, and documentation.

@stonechucker ideally, PM would switch to using willmyphonework.net (or it's database if that's an option) for compatibility information, as it is much more accurate from what we have seen in the community.  What it doesn't provide is a status as to whether or not the phone is blacklisted, which PM's IMEI checker does look for.  So ideally I'd like to see them combine the two and first query the willmyphonework.net database and then also query the blacklisted IMEI database and then give the customer (or prospective customer) a much more accurate and meaningful answer.

I agree with what @srlawren said.  As it is, the IMEI checker should not be presented mainly as a compatibility checker, but as a blacklist checker.
