I am a new customer. Just last week, I signed up for a $30/500MB plan. I see that now $30/1GB is available. Can you upgrade my plan to this one?

Probably not, but give it a try by clicking this: message to moderators to send a private message to the moderator team with your phone number, account PIN, and an explanation. Moderator hours are: Monday - Friday 9AM (ET) - 9PM (ET); Saturday - Sunday 9AM (ET) - 7:00PM (ET).

A week might be pushing it, but it doesn't hurt to try asking a moderator to see if they can do anything for you.
