Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Being that it is my first phone...not too familiar with all the tricks.
I'm sure it will work now.

Hello @rga ,
Are you an android user? If so, check to see in your messages app if your "Chat Feature" is turned on. If it is on, turn it OFF.
The android users your are sending messages to should have it OFF as well.

@rga you may have to re-register your phone number under your Apple ID
Sign out of every Apple service and device that uses your Apple ID, except the one you're using to change your Apple ID.
Go to Settings > [your name] > Name, Phone Numbers, Email.
Next to Reachable At, tap Edit > Delete.
Tap Continue and follow the instructions.
After you enter the mobile phone number that you want to use as your Apple ID, a verification code is sent to you at that number. Enter the verification code from the text into the fields provided.
Sign back in to all Apple services with your new Apple ID.

Are you using an iPhone? Maybe you were sending an iMessage. After sending the message, press on the message and then click on “Send as Text Message”

Text messaging doesn't use Wi-Fi.
If you're using iMessage, the messages are actually being sent through the internet. If that's the case, go into your iPhone's settings and enable SMS.

Turn on the SMS setting in the iMessage app.

@rga - What app are you using for texting?
