You can order a SIM from Amazon for $5 and faster shipping.
The steps must be followed in exact order if you are porting your number over to PM:

@MaxCell you have to do it all yourself, no booth, no physical locations.
So beware that everything will need to be done online through the self serve account by you moving forward if you choose to proceed with the services of Public Mobile with assistance through this Community or Public Mobile agents.
You think you will be ok with that?

Public Mobile SIM cards can be purcahsed from Telus stores, specifically the ones that are owned and operated by Telus, but the staff at these stores cannot assist with activation. To activate, you'll need to install the Public Mobile smartphone app. The app will guide you through the setup process.
