Your description is accurate , same ‘scenario’ in my wife case. Also ,what you posted to fix this at the very beginning is the best way to successful outcome . Solution:
c/p ‘ I also turned off iMessage and FaceTime (if you are running iOS) first. Then went to reset network settings. Phone rebooted and all was fixed. Then I turned iMessage and FaceTime back on. Only other thing I had to do was re-enter my wifi password‘

Hi, settings>cellular > 1. eSIM (my data only ) 2.eSIM (PM temp.#, should be my ported#, 3.physical SIM -not present. [12 pro max on iOS17.1.1 ] Thanks !

You're not resetting everything, just network settings. Phone will auto-reboot and then the ported-in number should appear under Settings>Phone>My Number

I reply to GreatNeighbour who suggested the same ,because ‘ It happens to my non-techie wife and I’ll try your way to fix it. Let you know outcome. Thanks’

ok confirmed that you're on iOS. Where EXACTLY are you seeing this temp number? Which menu or screen in iOS?
Same happened to me. Under Settings>Phone>My Number , it was showing the temporary number that I got when I activated with Public. But everything else worked. I could make calls and they were coming up with the correct ported-in number. The problem with iMessage and FaceTime was that they were both showing only the temp PM # and my email address that I can also message and FaceTime from. Are you seeing this too?

All is fine with porting , old service is ‘not in service’, iMessage works , voice call also and show my ported number…only the PM temporary number is shown on eSIM , not my ported ph#. Thanks.

@Homicide1 I used @Handy1 's advice and that was the solution for me.

It can sometime take several hours for your number to fully port over. Generally you'd want to continue to using your old SIM until you lose service (port complete), then plug in the PM SIM.
Also don't forget you have to text YES to the port prompt. If after several hours you're still on your old SIM then your port probably got stuck and you'll need to contact CS_Agent to reinitialize the port again. Good luck!

@Homicide1 Reset network settings and reboot the phone
