I recently changed phones but kept same SIM. Now I am told I need buy minutes to check my voicemail even though I have unlimited Quebec plan minutes and my plan is active. Why is that?

I believe you have to set your voicemail number on the "new" phone. This should be the correct way to set it.
1. I had call failed notice when trying to auto dial VM through the icon or pressing 1
2. Finnaly got call through but then had PM system message tell me I didn't have a voice package
This is what fixed my issue. Follow these steps and put your 10 digit PM phone number where the emojis are. There is also instruction to delete the number if you have to.
Check Current Voicemail Retrieval Number
Program New Voicemail Retrieval Number
#.
Delete Voicemail Retrieval Number
Edit: Lol that copy&paste worked weird.....

My voicemail now works by pressing 10 on my newly bought phone. I need somehow register this phone to Public Mobile and cancel previous phone that no longer works. Then I can press digit 1 again for voicemail. Thank you for your help.

When I enter 10 my voicemail works. It will mot work with pressing 1 digit. I need somehow register this phone I just bought so Public Mobile knows I will be using it rather than previous post.

Try calling your voicemail with your phone by dialing your own number and press * and enter your 4 digit voicemail pin#. You probably need to set your voicemail up on the "new" phone so you can press (1) to access your voicemail.

My area code is 514 same as my Quebec plan. Yes I can call other Quebec numbers. Only my voicemail will not access unless I buy extra minutes according to recording I get after pressing 1 digit and holding.

I asked the difference as there was an issue around new years I think with province wide calling plans so it may be related but it could also be a provisioning issue. Can you put the sim card back in the other phone or another phone altogether and see if you still have an issue?

As mentioned in headline I have unlimited Quebec plan and also I had no problem accessing voicemail till now with alternate phone.

Try rebooting your phone. Are you on an unlimited provincial calling plan vs a Canada wide calling plan?

Check Your Voicemail Messages,
To access voicemail messages from your mobile device, hold down the ‘1’ key on your phone keypad. You can also access your voicemail from a landline or any other phone line, by dialing your 10-digit phone number, selecting ‘Send’ or ‘Call’ and then pressing ‘*’ to skip the system greeting.

@WilliamF1 : What plan are you on? What is the area code of the voicemail access number set in your phone? Like what number shows when you press and hold the 1 key? Can you otherwise call other numbers in Quebec?

if your plan on 100 minutes,
yes, listening to voicemail will consume minutes,
update @WilliamF1
Calls to voicemail will deduct from in-plan minutes. and that plan for 100minutes only,
for another plan has a Unlimited voicemail....
