When I shut off my iMessage on my iPhone 12 device, I am unable to send or receive regular texts.  I’m trying to save my data usage when I’m out of wi-fi.  What should I do?

Make sure you didn't turn off "MMS messaging" in settings.

Connect to wifi, turn on imessage, turn on send as sms, turn on send as mms, turn off imessage.

Do all your other calling services work?

Like can you receive and make phone calls?

When you log into your self-serve site, is your account status active? There's no reason your text message service  ( SMS) shouldn't function when iMessage is off.

first, make sure your Send as Text is enabled on your iphone

Also, If you try to send a message and you see Exclamation mark icon with an alert that says Not Delivered, follow these steps:

Check your network connection.
Tap Exclamation mark icon, then tap Try Again.
If you still can’t send the message, tap Exclamation mark icon, then tap Send as Text Message.
