Yes, to activate (with or without friend promo), you need a NEW SIM card. Activation portal will ask for the SIM card number
You can get a SIM card from local Kiosk. If you activate with them, they will give it out for free.

@Babygirl226 : It's proper to use it during activation. Customers can also ask the moderators to apply it up to 120 days after activation.
Obviously one can't apply it before.
