I live in a rural area, I don’t expect service to be great, the best I get at my residence is one bar. Needless to say this is frustrating and somehow affects internet use on my phone. I have an iphone8. People with other providers don’t seem to have this problem. Is it my phone or Public?

The coverage map isn't an indicator of how good the service is in a location, but rather that there is some service to be expected, at least outdoors. While it can show edges of expected service areas, the map doesn't show any specific signal quality information for any specific locations.

@CrazyFox Best is to try your SIM in someone else's newer phone and see how the signal is. iPhone 8 being a very old device might have weaker antennas. If they are on Telus/Koodo and not having issues exactly where you are, then it might just be your phone.

First thing you can do @CrazyFox is to reset your Network Settings. By doing this, it will reset your connection with the Public Mobile network. If that doesn't work, then you can consider purchasing a phone booster for your house. Or you may have to find a new service provider in that has better service in your area.
Something like THIS could really help with signal.
