Re: Slow data

Kind of does feel like a rip off. Not even close to cap, no issues with my phone, yet always getting throttled. Currently sitting at 0.35 Mbps download and upload (one speed test gave me 5 Mbps upload). Had no issues with Telus 4G/LTE but never a good connection with Public Mobile 5G. It’s ridiculous how slow the connection is and I am near a Telus tower and not in a major city. The fact you’ll throttle paying Public Mobile customers for Telus and Koodo customers is disgustingly disingenuous to the service you are claiming to provide. I do believe I’ll personally be looking into legal options since throttling my connection before I reach my cap can’t be legal.

I have:

‣ 60GB of Unlimited Canada-wide data at 5G speed up to 250 Mbps

‣ iPhone 15 Plus

‣ 5G+ coverage area (Based on Telus's Coverage Map) - I sometimes go in areas that are in the 5G coverage areas. I never expect coverage outside of these areas.

I have worked as a customer technical support trainer and have done my due diligence in ensuring it was not something pertaining to my side. Steps I took (not limited to) were:

‣ Confirming my device was actually connected to 5G (Tried both 5G On and 5G Auto)

‣ Cycling Airplane Mode On/Off then Cellular Data On/Off and restarting my phone

‣ Resetting the Network Settings and rebooting the phone again

‣ Checking if there was a silent carrier settings update

‣ Forcing LTE only to confirm whether it was a 5G specific or network-wide

‣ Switching Data Mode to "Allow More Data on 5G" (was on "Standard")

‣ Speed Tests show speeds consistent with what one would expect with heavy deprioritization or a provisioning issue

‣ Confirming my account plan was correct, data bucket wasn't capped, still active, and no limiters/add-ons that would potentially reduce my speeds.

What I did not test:

‣ Whether the issue was due to the current tower being congested by moving closer to a different tower

‣ Switching to a different 5G carrier

I truly believe this happens because Telus/Koodo customers are being prioritized as I highly doubt this is happening because my account is incorrectly provisioned.

Thing is, I'm paying for 5G. If I wanted 4G/LTE, I would have stuck with my other plan with Telus. I switched to Public Mobile because it advertised a 5G plan and Telus didn't offer 5G plans in my area. The advertised 5G plan was suppose to offer high speeds which would be throttled when reaching the data cap of the plan. Instead what I got is a 5G plan that is throttled whenever Public Mobile feels like throttling it.

@Tech-Trainer

whenever that happens to me, I manually select 4G (LTE) and things get wwaaaaay faster.

hi @Tech-Trainer

what plan do you have?  what phone do you have? where you are at?

did you try Reboot phone and Reset network settings?

and try changing the network mode.  Instead of Automatic, try both 4G/LTE  and 5G
