Porting number from parent's account.

nmaloff

My adult daughter wants to port her number to Public, which has always been under her dad's Virgin account. She has a new PM sim card and will set up an account (with temp number if needed) before a port request.

What info does she need in order to have her number ported over in her name?

Thank you in advance for your input.

All you need is an unlocked phone and its valid active account number. You don’t need a temporary number as once you complete the activation process on this site it moves the number over automatically. All you have to do is complete the steps below:

I think @esjliv despite good intentions included way too much information. For that matter @will13am  may have made it a little too simple but is more to the point that porting isn't very complicated.

If you choose to port in upon activation of the sim card when you reach the second page your daughter needs to check the "are you authorized to port box?" Enter her fathers full name on the virgin account. The virgin account # and the phone number to be ported (hers.) The alternate phone # is optional. She may want to use a home phone or yours or her fathers. It does get registered in her pm account and can be used to help verify her identity if needed.

Usually a port from virgin will happen within a few minutes but allow up to 2 hours. Once the number is completely ported service on the virgin sim will stop. Services on the pm sim card will partially start right away with outgoing calling/texting and data and when she can recieve incoming texts and calls on the pm sim card this will confirm that the port is complete. If there is porting protection on the virgin account make sure dad removes it first before porting. If after 2 hours incoming calling/texting are not active on the pm sim and the virgin sim card is still active then the port is stuck and you should contact the moderators to fix the port. (Unlikely but it does happen.)

Be sure to have your daughter register her email for the second thirty days free credit promotion currently on offer and make sure she enters a referral code for an additional $10 credit on top of the autopay $2 reward. Welcome to public mobile!

OP asked a simple question; what information is required for porting?  Simple questions have simple answers.  Sometimes even difficult questions have simple answers.  I would suggest staying on point to the extent possible so as to minimize the opportunity for confusion.

@nmaloff do not choose a temporary number. just port it on activation. I've activated many virgin numbers and none have failed. by the way I'm even able to go backwards without the system screwing up. follow these instructions when activating

if porting, only use the account number(make sure this is the correct number. if there are two similar numbers, choose the number without letters) and pin(voicemail password) from the previous provider

*because your daughter's phone number is under the same account as her father's. you need to make sure she doesn't use his number as the alternate number, otherwise public mobile can have a brain fart and accidentally port the wrong number.

anytime you're proceeding to the next page and its loading, keep wiggling your mouse curser so the system doesn't hang. do this till the next page loads.

when registering your credit card use all capital letters and leave the apt field blank.

after clicking "process payment" don't forget to keep wiggling your mouse 👍

then insert your sim, reset your network settings and restart your phone

@nmaloff  No need for a temp number

During her PM activation just provide her Virgin number the Virgin account number and the Name on the account and her number should port over without any issues.

Your daughter should also insert the sim card into her device to make sure that her phone is not locked.

  • If you don’t want to wait, you can select a new number when activating, and transfer your old number later.

If you initially select a temporary number from Alberta, you can save PST on your initial payment and any top-ups you do prior to porting-in your number from another province. 😉

@nmaloff ,

I should mention when you get you daughter's Public Mobile account set up and activated, I would recommended not to enter the true name on the SELF SERVE account. There is no need for it. You change the name to whatever you want (make something up, that you can remember).

I do understand what you mean when it comes to a security standpoint, but this information isn't related to number porting.

For number porting, the dad's name needs to be used to submit the number port and it needs to be an exact match.

The fact that the number is in your dad's name makes no difference. Assuming that you have his permission, you just need to provide his name to the moderators (or on the number porting if you do it during activation) and the Virgin Mobile account number.

You can do all this on your SELF SERVE account as many times as you like, if you want.

@nmaloff , to port a phone number, you just need the name and account number associated with the phone number.

Hello @nmaloff

You can transfer your number from another provider or select a new number. In either case, here’s what you should know:

  • With a new phone number, you’ll have to choose your city and province to get an area code. You can also select the option to customize the last 4 digits of your number. Note that you can change your phone number once every 30 days after you’ve activated.
  • When you transfer or port your phone number from another provider, you can keep your existing number. Before you do, here are some things you should know:
    • Only the authorized account holder can transfer a number.
    • You cannot transfer numbers between Public Mobile accounts.
    • Your previous account must be active in order for the number transfer to go through. Once the transfer is complete, it will be automatically deactivated from your previous service provider.
    • Double check your old account info, as it needs to be correct in order for your number transfer to complete. Here’s the information you’ll need:

Mobile Phone Number Transfer Landline Phone Number Transfer

Alternate Phone NumberComplete billing address
First and Last Name of the account holderAlternate phone number
You’ll also need to provide one of the following: your old account number or your ESN/IMEI/MEID number or your account PINFirst and last name of the account holder
  • The number transfer process can take up to 2 hours to complete for a mobile phone number. When you transfer a landline number, the process can take up to 3 business days. When your number transfer is complete, you will receive a confirmation text message.
  • If you don’t want to wait, you can select a new number when activating, and transfer your old number later.
  • If you are transferring from a Koodo prepaid plan you will need to select a new number at activation, create a Community account, and then send a private message to our Moderator Team here to complete the transfer to Public Mobile.
  • If you’ve waited more than 2 hours, and you’re still experiencing issues, you should contact our Moderator Team. Since you’re new to Public Mobile, this will be a 2-step process:
    • First, create a Community account here by selecting ‘Sign In’, then ‘New User? Register here.”
    • Then, start a conversation with our virtual assistant, SIMon, to submit a ticket to the Moderator Team by clicking here.
