I successfully ported a number in to my account and now I can't activate iMessage. I get a message that says I need a sim with that phone number assigned to it. Wouldn't the sim I have currently, just activate with the new number?
I didn't read anywhere during the process of starting the port that I would have to buy a new SIM card.
My iPhone does not support esim.
Thanks for the help!

I went into Apple ID on the cell phone then Name, Phone Numbers, Email. Removed the ported in number, rebooted, and went back in to the same setting above and added the phone number and I still get the following message.
"This phone number cannot be used by iMessage and FaceTime. You must have a SIM associated with an Apple Device for (lists phone number) to be used for iMessage and FaceTime."

can you receive inbound calls?
if just iMessage the problem, go to Settings, remove the phone number first. Reboot phone, then go back to Settings to enter the phone number again to re-register iMessage
