I’m interested in getting an iPhone 12, is it compatible with public mobile?

PM uses the Telus network.
3G is used for calling. 4G (VoLTE) calling is not supported.
3G (UMTS/HSPA+) is used for "fallback" data. It's usually not an automatic default anymore and usually must be manually selected. It's also (tentatively) scheduled for shutdown by end of 2025.
4G (LTE/LTE-A) is used for "4G Speed" data, of course. It's also used for "3G Speed" data by default - "3G Speed" is in fact LTE throttled down to 3Mbps.
Some PM subscribers have reported their local 3G service is significantly faster than 4G-based 3Mbps "3G Speed". And some have reported the opposite, their local 3G service is pathetically slow or entirely absent. There's basically no way for normal people to predict this, just try using both settings and see which one works better.

iPhone 12 is fully compatible with PM. Unless the particular unit is carrier-locked to another provider, or it is blacklisted (lost/stolen/etc), or it is one of the "restricted" variants intended for certain foreign regions.

Yes the iPhone 12 is compatible with PM but remember to disable 5G and Automatic in the phone setting.
PM operates on 3G and 4G.
5G will drain the battery when it is search for the frequencies.
