PM circa 2016 is in its Death Throes so illegitimi non carborundum

While the demise of PM2 (circa 2016) has been confirmed by @Dave_M no destination has been provided. Of course this will make it easier to claim "we've arrived" once plans and the customer base has changed enough. By no means exhaustive (because it's no longer worth my effort), here's how I read the tea leaves.

a) grandfathered means a 12 month guaranteed price - Freedom promo just makes this time frame

b) opaque beats transparent - the current Koodo offer can be enhanced by negotiating after you've moved, there is a special "retail" deal just for new customers, no pre-warning of changes

c) PM3 circa 2018 would rather not have LTE customers - even some customers on a current 6 Gig/90 days plan have been offered Koodo deals

d) small carrot and major stick is the preferred mode to realign the customer base - both pioneer and promo customers were offered current plan at a higher price along with a Koodo offer at their current price

The bottom line: PM3 still has some great pricing compared to the competion BUT assume this is PM3's operating style when evaluating carriers and recommending PM3.

I don't mean to spread any doom and gloom, and I certainly don't know anything for sure, but the more I think about it, the more I beggining to wonder if Public Mobile's reward system is unsustainable. And even if Public Mobile can still make a profit, I'm pretty sure that the Big 3 doesn't want to offers prices like these (eg. Fall Promo 2016+rewards that can almost cancel out the entire price of service) in the near future.

If we take the example of the more active community members, an Oracle on Fall Promo 2016 already down to $27 per 30 days (or less).  0.5% members are at $31 per days, while 5% users are payinig  $33.

But the prices get even lower than that.  But after in a little less than 4 more years, those prices per 30 days will be down to $23 (Oracle), $27 (0.5%), and $29 (5%).  I realize that those community rewards are only paid out to a limited number of people each month, so let's assume Public Mobile is okay with that. That's still leaves all other Fall Promo people not receiving community rewards down to prices of $33/30 days.

Factor in the referal rewards and you suddenly have a whole bunch of people less than Telus really wants.

So, I'm not sure at how long the rewards program will continue.  Perhaps, Telus just wants people off the Fall Promo plan just because they don't want tto be paying rewards on top this already pretty good price plan.  Who knows that the plan is?

I'm just not so sure how long this type of pricing and rewards system will continue.

In my personal opinion, things look uncertain for Public Mobile.  With these pushes to get customers to switch, my opinion is that Telus really doesn't want people as customers at Public Mobile but rather at the other Telus brands.  I don't have any concrete proof of that obviously, but something is up with all these migration offfers.

@sbreakin Sorry for late reply. Lately I find being around the community more than an hour at a time intitiates too much sadness for the demise of the the Public Mobile I joined 3 years ago.

Anyway, to your question to "ANy chance you could expand on b) what retail/ extras you are aware or heard of?". The only item in this category that disturbed me is the "retail" plan of $30 for prov calling, texting and 1 GB 3G data. This is $5 less than that found on the Plan page. The issues are that a) it's not available to current customers, and b) we only learned of it when two new customers praised it.

Dang @Luddite, I didn’t need to post mine so soon.....

Yup, I’m stuck here.  Went to both a Wow Kiosk, and a Koodo kiosk at my local mall.  I can switch, but require a credit check to get the post paid plan.

NOT COOL PUBLIC MOBILE.  I am going to be renewing my FALL PROMO 2016 on March 11th, as the cost will be less than $120 plus taxes, and it’s the same network. Sure, I only have 1 friend referral, and I’m getting $1 per 30 day loyalty rewards, and i get a few rewards from community, and the $6 AutoPay credit.  Where else can i still get a deal like this, for base cost $120 plus taxes for 90 days?  I can’t...  so, I’m staying put.

New post just to blatantly make this thread more visible for a few minutes. Robot LOL

@sbreakin, current Fall 2016 promo subscriber... just got SMS from PM for the 6GB/$40 plan.

Assuming, without researching it's a postpaid system, which I will not use, as they're saying I could qualify for a $0 phone on a tab.

Prepaid is what I want, and the $100 bill credit probably wouldn't be provided to me if I chooose prepaid.

For pre-paid I think staying with PM is still the best bet.

I did come from Koodo's pre-paid & they are a little similar. I was on their Pre=paid text only plan for $15 - 10% is auto pay & added a data & voice bundle of minutes. I found it was costing me about $25/mo but I defaulted to data off & turn on when needed (so didn't use much).

Yup, Bell's 'competition' with Chatr & Public Mobile... a disaster IMHO, but serves the big picture of making consumers think we have a 'choice'...

Did I mention wireless 'competition' is a mess?

@Luddite, we can always count on you for brutal honesty - thank you!

It is a sad time in the PM saga, but much like what has been said above, I don't see much alternative out there. Everytime I've referred PM to a friend, I always explain the caveat "they are owned by Telus, right now prices and service are excellent, but that can change anytime!"  The reality is that the Canadian wireless scene is a disaster, very minimal competition - and frankly the competition we do see is more of a performance to make customers feel good about their choices, it is not genuine by any means.

The one thing that gave me hope early on was the strong committment to community - especially from the leaders of our community in the early days - people like @Luddite and @Martin who were honest and relentless in their efforts to support new customers and challenge PM to get things in order. There are many more today who are continuing in this spirit, and I believe that foundation was established early on in the PM community.

Today, I am still hopeful in the possibility that the online PM community may be able to pressure Telus et. al to at least maintain PM as it is long-term. The mess Public Mobile made with the attack on the Fall 2016 promo was an example of that, but it will require more organisation on our part in the future if they intend to make significant negative changes to plans.

Thank you @Luddite for your thoughts & reading of tea leaves. I was quite surprised & concerned at the sudden large price increase in Feb and the approach taken (more of the stick to stay & here's an out) and felt encouraged that so many others joined to voice our concern & opposition.  I have split the difference moving one account to Koodo with the semiofficial 5G offer & left one account here (fall 120/12 plan).

ANy chance you could expand on b) what retail/ extras you are aware or heard of?

I appear to have been able to get the unofficial 5G/$40 plan but had hoped to get call forwarding due to the weak signal at our home.

In case it helps others who still have a week before the expiry here's my pro/ con

Koodo Pros:

Canada wide minutes - might be useful for those that travel more or regularly talk to other provinces but with other options (apps) I think Canada minutes are more of a convenience).

Data: the official 4G offer is not a carrot. PM has 12G /90 & flexibility. If you are able to get bumped up to the 5Gb/mo it will offer a buffer - but don't go over the overage charge is steep $7/100mb).

Data: they do advertise 'shock free' data & as I understand pause/ stop data when you reach your limit - thus hopefully won't hit the extra charges without actually ordering them.

Phone discount: access to phone discounts. Fortunately, the migration plans are the medium tab. Generally, the newest phones/ best discount is a Large tab which is available to those on more expensive plans but there's often some for medium too.

Customer service/ Kiosks: they have a community but also have phone/ chat & Kiosks. Note that some service items that can be done self-serve may have a fee but for PM we should be adept at self-serve.

Roaming: more roaming options. USA is $7/day -which is more than Rogers at $6, it is only charged if you use the service - so if you are camping in remote regions - your phone is there for emergencies. ALso might be cheaper than PM for day trips. Can also roam around the world for $10?/d but both have $100/mo cap. (So local sim might be an option).

PM:
Data: 90-day plans offer great flexibility for uneven data use.

No extra charges/ roaming: hey it's pre-paid so no way to wind up roaming in USA of using too much data without buying an add-on.

CON: risk of price hikes/reward charges or movement to 3G speed.

I still think there is a  lasting value in "the  Fall2016  PM plans" for  the ppl who want to  stick with  those.

There is no urgent reason  for Telus to eliminate those above-mentioned plans, no matter how they want to reshape PM's main profile.

Willing to  stlill play the poker game  with Telus for now 😉

What’s been confirmed? Did I miss something?

Sadly, I'm stuck here, if I'm going to continue with cellular service.  I'm staying on my plan until it's no longer suitable for me to continue.

If I need to downgrade, I will.  I had, and still want to have, high hopes for this carrier.

@Luddite, that is telling it like it is, bravo!  If I can add my 5c worth here, if anyone wants to imagine what this service could be like going forward, check out Lucky Mobile and Chatr Mobile.  In a monopoly, it is not about competition, rather it is all about conformance.  This highly disruptive service while it exists has been fantastic for customers.  It is why we are here.  It is why we were so passionate in our response when the first attempt was made to dismantle it two weeks ago.  Unfortunately, the monoploy partners have decided they don't like it as demonstrated by the fairly recent roll out of Lucky Mobile.  The time has come to reshape this service so that it conforms.

@Luddite, great post and interpretation of what we could be facing in the very near future with PM.
