Yesterday I opened an account but then asked a customer support agent to cancel it because of a misunderstanding by me. Public has already taken my first payment. I downloaded an esim card but on a different phone. If we can start over I will need to order or pick up an actual sim card not an esim. Can we do this? More details would be helpful. What did the Customer service agent (CSA) respond to you? Did they cancel your account?
If you want to stay with Public mobile and use the same activated plan, then you will need to purchase a physical SIM card and then contact CSA to change on your account.

Yes, you ccan advise PM not to cancel your account yet and wait for you to get a physical sim. You already talking to PM via messaging i guess, so just reply them and ask them to hold on
Then buy a physical sim from Telus or Koodo or Mobile Klink or Amazon, then message PM back and ask them to update the sim card number
