My data usage already gone at 75%

BAL

Hi, I received a message stating that my data plan was used at 75%. I am a bit surprised because usually, I have more than enough to order a 1 GB, I never use it completely. Is it possible to check? Thanks.

@BAL please see instructions here:

How can you get help with your account, activation, or service?

In your message please include:

  • PM Phone Number, 4 digit PIN, Account email address, Detailed explanation of your issue

Don't know your pin?--provide any 3 of the following:

  • Complete mailing address, Email address, Alternate phone number, Date of birth, Last top up date & amount

How long until they reply?:

  • Office Hours: Mon-Friday 9am to 9pm, and Saturday & Sunday from 9am to 7:30pm [Toronto Time].
  • Messages are replied to during office hours, in the order in which they are received
  • Typical response time is between 1-3 hours, depending on message queue, but can be up to 48 hours.
  • There is no need to send multiple messages.

How can I view my private messages between myself and a Community Moderator?

This is so ridiculous. I can't reach the customer support from the website, it always to the community. So I dialed *611 and I get a message (about a second long) saying that I can't use the service. Go to Messages and send a private message to the Moderator team.

How many times did you run the speed test. If you ran it twice, it could very well use 75% of your data.

As mentioned above by @mimmo My Data Manager is a great app to track your data usage. You can set the cycle at 90 days so you don't have to reset your phone statistics manually at the end of the 90 days to track your data. As an Android user I use Data Witness. But my wife and daughter are iPhone users, and both use My Data Manager, and it works wonderfully.

you can also request to renew your plan early. It may be more economical that way.

Use your data monitor to see which one use data, so you can prevent in future.

Now the data monitoring system is easier to use now.

Speed tests on LTE can use hundreds of MB of data. Don’t. Use. Them. Unless you really really need to for some reason.

If you use the speedtest app and check under results it will actually tell you how much it used. I’ve seen as much as 400MB testing a fast connection.

"Public Mobile here..." notifies you at 75% Data usage.  Then 95% Data usage.  And finally just cuts you off at 100%, no more Data until your next billing cycle.

There's no way to use more than 100% of your Data allocation, no way PM can bill you for overages.  Not sure if SMS/MMS attachments will still work - they require Data but (on PM) they do not count towards Data limits.

You can purchase Data add-ons to extend the allocation (and these continue to rollover across billing cycles indefinitely, until fully used).  Or you can seek alternatives like free wifi hotspots, etc.

There might be an app you can install that will isolate past usage. My data manager might be one such Program.

I have an iPhone 6 with iOS. These statistics are imbedded in the system. So it is just that I negected to reset the statistics. I will do that at every 90 days when I renew. Thanks for the tip.

For future prevention, I find it important to keep an eye on all data usage, I'm not sure which phone you use but for android there are a few apps that help you do just that. You can set limits and alarms and some apps will give a daily budget for the amount of data you can use, this should also help detect any rogue apps leeching data from you.

As another prevenative, I always turn off mobile data when I'm connected to wifi, this allows me to recieve calls and texts but prevents any data usage through Public Mobile. Good luck!

You might have one or more apps leeching data continuously.  Disable background data and automatic updating on everything you can, or only allow sync/updates across wifi.

@BAL Check that Settings >> Cellular - WiFI assist is OFF, otherwise you will use cellular data even while on wifi.

To save cellular data:

- Turn off Backround App refresh.

- Go to Settings >> Cellular and turn off any apps you can manage with only wifi.

@BAL - Just a thought... you mentioned your actual data speads as 135 Mbit/sec for download and 23 Mbit/sec for upload.  Where did you get these numbers from?  Did you run a speed test?  Any chance you ran it several times?  It's just that the speed test will use up some of your data allotment.  Not that it would use up a huge chunk of your 1GB, but it would contribute.

My data speed is LTE...

@BAL, The speed I was asking about is your data plan speed (LTE or 3G).  Sometimes, the data used does not get reset by Public mobile's system, for people with a 3G data plan.

Thanks for the hint. My Internet speed is 135 Mbit/sec for download and 23 Mbit/sec for upload. Unfortunately, I do not reset my data usage on my iPhone 6 when I renew every 3 months. So, I can't say.

@BAL just to expand on @Anonymous reply.  the reason for asking what internet speed you has is becasue there is/was a bug that would not allow the 3g data to reset at renewal, which led to messages stating close to data limit.

also what phone do you have? can you check its data history

@BAL, Your data usage can bee seen in your self service portal account under data and add-on usage.  By the way, what type of data plan do you have (LTE or 3G), and when was your last renewal?
