I upgraded my plan to 5G (from 4G), do I need a new sim or is it as simple as popping my old SIM into the new phone when my new cycle start?

No, no new sim needed. You can use the same sim card to access 5G network.

No, you don’t need a new SIM card.
Just pop your SIM in your new device and you’ll be good to go.
