Recommending public mobile to a friend, but wondering what the coverage is like in Alaska. Any suggestions?

No matter how you slice it or dice it. Will need a USA add on or a subscription that has Can/USA calling.
And if lives in Alaska need to check to see if PM frowns upon calling mostly from USA. I know Freedom Mobile does.

And as mentioned look at AT&T and T-Mobile coverage maps.

I haven't heard about Public Mobile warning anybody about too much US usage or cutting anyone off, so it should be fine.

Just fyi. I have a balance at VoIP.ms. I used them for my land line. I have a Zoiper app and a VoIP,ms app. They run on data or unrestricted wifi. I can call out and show my mobile number as the caller id. But the app can’t be called to as I don’t have a DID. Is that feasible for you?

Depending on the phone you have. You will manual connect to T-Mobile, At&T or Verizon when  you are at the port of call.

On the cruise ship, you can connect the ship’s wifi.

You also need to enable VoLTE (voice over LTE).
