I have Android Phone, Ulefone_X, have checked compatibility but data does not work. My plan includes data. Data set up options are:
Preferred Networks: set to Public Mobile (3G/4g)
Preferred Network Tyoe: 3G
Access point ame: sp.telus.com
Network operators: Public Mobile 3G
Any suggestions on what to try.

@hycm53 to be clear, I'm not preaching "never sideload apps!", but just that caution should always be taken, and not everyone that sees a suggestion like yours will take any sort of precation. As the others have pointed out, "virus free" does not mean it won't do bad things (malware comes in many forms, some of which are harder to detect than others). Even stuff on the Play Store occasionally gets discovered having issues, and that's after passing Google's automated checks.

If you can change or add APN, you need install this app:
@hycm53 first off, installing apps from other than the Play Store is always risks, espcially from eomsone's random OneDrive. Secondly, given that this app is missing B2 3G frequency (1900MHz), it won't help much anyway.

@hycm53 scanning an app using an antivirus app on a phone that does not report a problem does not necessarly mean that the app in question is safe. When you install an app from an uknown source you are always taking a chance.
App might not have virus, but people should be more concerned with permissions given to app and what information it collects. A little scary what the apps have permission to do and how many don't allow people much privacy.

If you can change or add APN, you need install this app:
After installed app, follow the instructions to edit APN:
https://apn-canada.gishan.net/en/apn/public-mobile
Before you port your previous phone number to PM, make sure your previous Account is still active, and write down account number, PIN if you have., since you need them when you port.
The app works for Asus Zonfone 4 Max that I’m using right now.

Ah. But really much more importantly is what RobertQc posted earlier. Your phone is not good for this network.
For 8.1 you have a few options.... @wetcoaster ?? take it away. 🙂
1. Freedom Mobile SIM
2. Roam Mobility SIM
3. Speakout SIM
4. an app that will let you enter the proper APN settings.
But. Your. Phone. Is. Not. Very. Good. For. This. Network.
@Anonymous
Thanks for mention - on the phone right now, copying those links is something that works way better on full keyboard.
But I'm right with you re: phone. If I understand correctly, it might not even work properly for calls without B2 on 3G. In Canada it works on Rogers' 2G until that is taken offline in 2020, but you will need 3G B2 and B5 minimum to reliably connect with the Public Mobile / Telus network. For good coverage with LTE data B4 is a must as it's still the most widely available frequency band.

There're 3 dots on access point name right hand above, click edit, then follow this link to change it:

What version of Android are you running?

@embacher: Your APN is wrong. That is the APN for Telus customers you need to change it to the ones mentioned in @RobertQc post above. Why do people buy phones with limited NA bands is beyond me.

Network
2G GSM: 1900/1800/850/900(B2/3/5/8)
3G WCDMA: 2100/850/900(B1/5/8)
4G FDD-LTE: 2100/1800/2600/900/800(B1/3/7/8/20)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telus_Mobility. The phone seems to have terrible compatibility with the network, where do you check to make sure it would work? It's missing many of the required frequencies.
3G band 5? Yes.
4G band 7? Yes.
3G band 2? No.
LTE band 4? No.
LTE band 2? No.
LTE band 5? No.
LTE Band 12? No.
LTE Band 13? No.
LTE Band 17? No.
LTE Band 29? No.

Go into network settings and make sure "mobile data" is enabled. Restart your phone. Turn air plane mode ON then OFF. Do you have another phone to try your sim card in to see if data is working? Has data ever been working? Have you tried data on more than 1 app, have you confirmed you have no local data restrictions / firewall settings? Go into mobile data usage under settings and make sure you have not used your local "data limit" and there are no network restrictions.
What plan are you on? Do you see data listed under your plan and does it show you are at 0 / XXXXX MB?
Go into network search and try reconnecting to the network and make sure LTE is set to preferred (even if you have 3g) If was already on LTE, then try switching to 3G, did it help? No? Then go back to LTE.
Does MMS work? (Not SMS) MMS uses data. Try sending a picture to yourself. Did you get it?
The most likely cause is the APN. You need to configure (Or re-configure even if you have already configured before) your APN settings to be able to send pictures (MMS) and navigate on internet (DATA). Your "Mobile Data" needs to be activated.
Click on your APN sp.telus.com and check the details of it.
