Smartphone Cellular Service, Network, Data Issues

Hey guys, I’ve been having some pretty bad experiences with trying to switch to a New Phone, Not Service. Here I will do my best to explain everything. Any Help, Advice, or Similar Experience is very much appreciated.

So I am on MetroPCS. I have been with them for about 8 years with no issues. Just recently, MetroPCS let me know that I have Access to 5G service with no extra cost per my plan. I have been using the same SIM Card for probably about 6 years.

The story begins with me using a Revvl 4+ and an iPhone 7 switching back and forth every couple months , with No Service Issues. I have never had a 5G Capable Phone before, and my Revvl 4+ had cracked and just wasn’t good anymore, and the iPhone 7 is too old. It was time for a change. I decided to buy myself an LG V60 online. The listing stated “Factory Unlocked GSM”. When the phone arrived, it booted up with the “Sprint by T-Mobile” Logo, I thought nothing of it. I called the Metro Line and Switched over the Imei as I usually do when switching to a new device. Immediately, I notice Cellular Status Bar Icon flashing between 5g/4g/3g. The service was awfully slow, and after about 5 minutes, the Status Bar Icon went to 3g only. I could not get 4 or 5g on the device no matter what. The APN Settings were locked. I did a Network Refresh through Metro and Every other refresh and step possible on the phone itself. Nothing worked, so I assumed it to be because it was a Sprint phone, it didn’t have the right Bands etc.. So I returned it. Put the sim back into the Revvl and have no problems. I then bought a Oneplus 8 5G T-Mobile Unlocked. It arrived with Android 10, I put my Sim in after the activation call, and I had nice fast 5G internet service and I made a phone call and few texts. I updated the phone to Android 11, And immediately I could not Make Any Phone Calls, or make Any Texts, although I still had 5G Icon Status Bar and Full Internet Access. I called Oneplus and Metro and spoke with a live agent and still could not figure it out. APN Settings we’re correct, I did a network refresh, I cleared the Cache of the Phone app, Messages App, Updated Google Carrier Services, Deleted Google Carrier Services, factory reset, everything you could think of. Nothing worked. I re-activated my sim back to the Revvl and it works fine.

I guess the Sprint phone makes sense that it didn’t work, but what even happened to the Oneplus? Was it really the Android Update? Or did the sim just crap out after a few minutes? I’m getting really discouraged. I’m going to buy a new SIM card as my current one is 6 years old and have the Metro Store switch my number on that. I want to buy this Pixel 4xl, mostly because it’s not 5g as I think this might the problem as well. I don’t know if that’s what’s doing it, but I’m scared I don’t want to waste my time and money anymore. My only guess is that maybe it’s the 5g phones are not compatible with my SIM Card. Or were the Two phones I got were really just bad. Like I said any help, helps. I really don’t want to be stuck using these old cracked phones anymore.

You can ignore that copy/paste 3 liner at the bottom of that post just above, about contacting customer support @Killjoy1056.

Unless, your post was in reference to some kind of port over to Public Mobile, and trouble with that port....it would be wasting Public Mobile customer support staff's time, and yours as well.

@Killjoy1056

You have to be very careful when buying US provider phones even when they are unlocked because some (the LG being one) cannot receive software updates unless they are connected to their original provider's network with an active service plan. While this thread dealt with at&t you could be experiencing a similar issue....?

Better to shop around for an international phone rather than an unlocked US provider phone. I don't know your budget but swiftronics has the OnePlus 8T for $579 and the dual sim 9 for $649...

@Killjoy1056

Do you also have Public Mobile account or plan, or, you are just hoping for a similar user here with your issue?

A six year old SIM card should be fine, unless there has been some major differences over the years.

Your statement above saying:

"I called the Metro Line and Switched over the Imei as I usually do when switching to a new device."

When changing phones, you should be able to remove the SIM from the old device and pop it into the new device if the same size SIM slot (or adding / removing SIM adapters as needed).

Why would you need to call t-mobile to notify them when you are switching to a new device?

Was this the number you tried calling for t-mobile's support, 1-888-863-8768.

@Killjoy1056   this has nothing to do with PM, I guess?

Look like Oneplus 8 Android 11 has problem with 5G, but you should check with OnePlus forum instead
