Brilliant idea.... When someone pays their bill you send out a reciept with your HST number on it which is law.  Just a thought.  You wouldnt want Revenue Canada doing investigations into your billing proceedures so you may want to prioritze this before they start tearing into you.  That would cost a lot of downtime and expense of resources.  Whouldnt it just be easier to issue receipts?!

Well, considering the way things have been going along, I'm not sure if it's such a big hassle for Revenue Canada at the moment.

HOWEVER, if you pay by payment voucher, the receipt you get at the time of payment is all you need.

Were payment vouchers the first (and possibly only) method of payment when the original Public Mobile opened?

For the majority of people who take the option to pay by auto-pay using there credit card, in order to get a reduced monthly bill, no that 'pay by payment voucher' option is not an option and no reciept is issued.

@choworth FYI, as long as you leave AutoPay turned on, you will continue to get the discount.  However, if you were to purchase voucher(s) and apply them to your account prior to the date when the payment would come out via AutoPay, you get the best of both worlds.  Voucher receipts for the payment, plus the discount.

I don't understand why you all come up with excuses for a deficiency?

Pay by credit card, issue a receipt.  Its a very simple request.  Some people want the option to 'set it and forget it'  and not have to do a series of extra steps to get something they are legally entitled to!

@choworth I should clarify--I wasn't necessarily suggesting that you should do what I mentioned, or coming up with excuses.  I was addressing the specific reason you thought you couldn't use vouchers because you would miss out on the AutoPay reward--I was trying to let you know that that is not the case.

That said, I don't disagree that it's odd.  You can certainly get your payment transaction history in self-serve, but all the items there are pre-tax; tax is only applied on the payment/top-up itself.  It is odd that we don't get a receipt for the payment.  You can request one by contacting the moderator_team via private message, but I do agree it should just happen automatically.  Right now it's a manual process for them to prepare an invoice.  If enough people request it every month, they may eventually see the value in investing in automating the process.  That's the only thing I can suggest right now.  Or, you could try complaining to the CCTS or the CRA to see if you can force this.

Do other prepaid phone providers automatically provide receipts? i.e. is this an issue unique to Public Mobile?

@KMG

It's been a long time but way back when, in the mid to late 2000s, neither Fido nor Telus offered official invoices for their prepaid accounts.

More recent experience: Ever since they put up their new website with a proper account part (2012?) SpeakOut has been sending automated invoices/receipts for credit card top-ups.

Sorry for not being able to offer a more conclusive and up-to-date overview.

@KMG Since at least 2008-09 most prepay carriers issue receipts (many are online only with an additional charge for paper)

I have also called Public out for this issue a few times as I really think they should have something online even if its a simple 3 line sheet of paper (money paid, taxes collected, hst registration) as emailing mods every couple of months seems unnecessary

However @choworth Public is NOT in violation of the law. They DO issue receipts (when you ask) and there is no law that says receipt must be issued the second the payment is processed. Charities & banks also will wait to end of year to issue a single receipt regardless of taxes paid or collected during the year.
