Though I do not communicate with PM through web mail, it's possible that the above has already been implemented.

If not, I believe that it deserves serious consideration.

For instance, I use mail to contact my web hosting company every time I have a question or concern.

Every mail sent to the company immediately results in an automatic response that it has been received. This gives me the feeling of reassurance that my mail was not lost in cyberspace. If it is a new problem/concern, my mail is assigned a new file no. by zendesk.com
which handles filing on behalf of my hosting company. If my concern/problem was already brought to the hosting company's attention, the reply-to address contains the file no. assigned by zendesk.com . In this way, more order is brought to the sending and receiving of web mail, and the problems/concerns that they contain.
