new user - wireless data setup

Hi,

I just activated a new line on an old LG NEXUS 4 with the $40/4.5G plan in promo. Voice and text work great, but no wireless data.

I've selected PM as the provider from 3 options, kodoo, PM, and Telus. I've also checked the APN settings (no customization from me, it's auto-set on selecting PM as the provider), they match the default settings for PM on https://apn-canada.gishan.net/en. Cannot find nexus 4 from the phone model list, not sure if special settings is needed. please help.

By the way, if I look at my phone's data usage, the warning threshold is set to 2G. But the plan I selected is 4.5G 3G data, not lte data. Not sure how this work out, will I actually be able to use more than 2G data? For how long?

Thanks for the link. It solved my problem.

Yes, I needed to created a new APN for PM, and set the default parameters laid out on https://apn-canada.gishan.net/en/apn/public-mobile.

I cannot use the auto-created APN PC Mobile, even though the default parameters on this APN  exactly match those for PM, but there are extra custom parameters I think are the trouble maker.

According to @computergeek541 from this thread   https://productioncommunity.publicmobile.ca/t5/Getting-Started/LG-Nexus-4-no-data/td-p/99592

For Nexus 4, delete all automatically populated APNs and add the PM APN manually.

If it does not work, do a network reset since Nexus 4 is manufactured by LG.

The stock rom was by google.  I don't recall there being a network reset function.  But then again, I never used the stock rom on mine.  Well just long enought to turn it on to see if it worked.  I needed to use LTE and so the radio firmware hack was essential.

@harsheng Just for info, PM works on the Telus LTE network but the 3g plans are throttle to 3g. So sometimes you might see 3g sometimes it might say LTE, nothing there to be concerned about.

Edit: Or is the phone too old to have LTE...

If your APN Settings are correct, you could try a network reset and see whether your data will work afterwards.

This is not a shamsung or LG phone, not network reset function, at least not that I remember.

@harsheng, the good old nexus 4 is a google phone which should have a boat load of built in APNs.  That said, this service is rather new compared to the Nexus 4.  It is concievable that there is no match within the built in set of APNs.  Simply use the add APN function (+sign), create the new APN, hit the 3 dots to bring up the save menu.  Click on radio button to use the newly created APN.  Go to preferred network type and select 3G or wcdma, can't remember the term.  Don't select 2G because Public Mobile does not run on 2G.  BTW, APN settings are not phone specific, they are carrier specific.

With stock firmware/rom on a Nexus 4, data will not work in out-of-the-box state. You need to set the access point manually.

Just remember you are on a 30 day plan, but your phone is monthly. Plus what your phone records and what PM records will be slightly different

You can change the "warning threshold" to whatever you want it to.

Go to applications, settings, data usage, set mobile data limit and change the cycle as close as you can to your renewal date and set it to 4.5gigs or even higher, it doesn't matter if you go over. This is a pre-paid service so you will never get any overages. So set it to something a bit higher to never have your phone cut you off while your plan has more data left

Public mobile will send you a couple text messages when you get close to your data limit.
