Preauthorized payments/autopay does fail unfortunately. Is your service not working right now?
On the day of renewal, Public mobile does show various warnings about autopay, failure to pay, etc. As long as your phone is working and you are on autopay, you can ignore the warnings.
If service not working and account is presently suspended, login to your account to manually load up funds and it should re-activate your plan.
