Tethering problem, help please!

Unlocked Alcatel U50 from Koodo. PM website said - it is compatible. Everything works fine except Internet tethering. No problem creating Hot Spot and connecting to it, but no internet. USB tethering is not working also (enables, but no internet). Bluetooth tethering - same thing.

When APN settings appear to have the correct settings like this but are greyed out, this means that the setttings cannot be edited.  Some phones have had the software programmed like this long before the release of Android 8.1.

In some Android 8.1 devices, you cannot add new APN settings.  This is device software dependent and is not something that affects everyone using Android 8.1 software.

@jan6577 Can you not add a new APN and enter all the info mentioned above? Look for the + sign or add option. Then enter the info found here: https://apn-canada.gishan.net/en/apn/public-mobile

Mobile internet sp.mb.com is chosen by default and I cannot choose the tethered mobile internet isp.mb.com.

When i enter no mater which one of them, all settings are greyed.

Is it possible thai my SIM card is too old, because I use it for 3 years with other phones.

@jan6577 Have you tried leaving the APN type field blank or "default" only?

If I need to replace the phone, any good phone suggestion? I need the tethering.

How rooting my phone can help me?

@jan6577There are many things I would try, first without root your standard file explorer / access won't get you to edit certain files in the rom you also don't have access to unlock files or manually force close certain processes and if your apn is stored in the /data/com.android.settings/shared_prefs/com.android.settings_preferences.xml you could probably just edit it outside of the standard settings interfece. Locks are done by andriod, not by the database/ configuration files.

As for a phone suggestion thats too broad, there are too many variables involved with choosing a phone and honestly I don't know why you can't edit the APN so whats to say the phone I suggest you could edit the apn in the same case.

@jan6577If none of my suggestions work, I am sorry, I don't know how else to help you. It's not public mobile or the service, its your phone/operating system stopping you. Hopefully someone else can chime in because I am out of ideas. If it was my personal phone I would contact the manufacturer, install a custom rom, root my phone or continue to search google for help. I have read through 20+ different pages and have found nothing else I have not already posted for you to try.

What about USB tethering?

Is there any settings that can make it work?

Bought the phone two months ago with Android 7. Was not shure if possible upgrading to 8.

Same with the airplane mode - APN settings grayed. Did the reboots and tried one more time with removed SIM. No luck.

@jan6577Did you try the reset to default option?

jan6577

I tried 4 devices with the same results.

With no SIM card APN was greyed.Unable to select it.

After rebooting with the SIM card, same as before, APN settings are greyed.

@jan6577Did you update to andriod 8+ or are you still running 7?

If you have 8 you might need to follow this guide

@jan6577

"Sometimes, APN settings on your device for a particular carrier may be "locked" such that they are "grayed out" and can't be modified.

This is often an indication that they have been set by your currently connected carrier and that you shouldn't need to modify them. However, in some cases it is possible to work around this and gain access to modify them again.

Reset to default option

At the APNs screen, try the Reset to default option available by pressing the overflow menu button. This will delete any of your customizations to APN settings and return them to their initial state as provided by the manufacturer.

If your carrier has pushed APN settings to you, this may revert from those settings back to the ones included on your device, and get you back the ability to add new ones.

Airplane mode option

Another thing you can try is to remove the SIM card or enter Airplane mode (called "Flight mode" on some devices) prior to selecting the Reset to default option. If your carrier tries to push new APN settings to your device regularly, this may afford you enough time to perform your modifications before that happens again and you lose access to edit them.

Note that if you remove the SIM card, your device may need to be rebooted afterwards.

If you removed the SIM card, replacing it may require another reboot."

@jan6577Your phone is set up for the internet sharing option by default when you enable hotspot? Are there any hot spot restrictions? Your computer connecting to it is set to automatically dhcp an ip address? Doesn't already have a static ip set? Does an internet gateway show up? Does it have DNS servers set up? Can you ping any other devices on the network or google 8.8.8.8?  It's not just set up to access data / file transfer/ midi right? is there a firewall active? Have you tried more than 1 device to use the hot spot?

@jan6577Turn off your phone. Take out your sim card. Turn on your phone. See if you can configure APN, if so, do it. Then turn off the phone. Insert sim card, on next bootup if it asks to get carrier settings say no and see if that works.

@jan6577Settings--> more--> mobile networks--> access point names--> tap on the appropriate APN--> go down to APN type--> add ,dun without any empty space

Apparently thats all you need to add to the standard APN settings.

The normal APN settings is

APN type: default,mms,agps,supl,fota,hipri

Change it to

APN type: default,mms,agps,supl,fota,hipri,dun

I know this may be a silly question, but is the mobile data working on your phone? Is your MMS working?

Did you configure Tethering APN?
