If I currently have a contract with Telus, and I want to switch from Telus to PM. What is the proper way to do so? Should I contact Telus to end my contract first? Or should I just go activate my PM sim card and port over my telus number directly?

Also make sure you use a different email address than what is on your telus account

@chj915 some tips to remember when porting your number:
- Do not use any identifier except your account number EXACTLY as shown on your bill; it is the best item for any port-in request
- Do not make any errors in the Authourized User; this must be EXACTLY as it appears on your bill
- Do not use your number as the Alternate Number; use someone else's
- Do not forget to click "I am authourized ...." BEFORE you entering your number (courtesy imm1304)
- Do not cancel your account; that will happen automatically
Thanks @Luddite
As ShawnC13 has mentioned make sure you ask the community/research to ensure a smooth port. Follow the points i have mentioned above.

Hi, please don't end your contract as it may close your account with telus.
You don't want to close your account or service with telus because doing so would cause you to lose your phone number.
What you can do is just find out from telus if it will cost you anything if you were to end your contract or switch but don't tell them to close your account.
Then keep your telus account active and open/activate your PM account, make sure everything works and then port in your telus number.
Once your port in is successfully completed, your telus account will automatically close and they will send you a final invoice with and pending or owing balance.
hope this helps.

Do not close your Telus account, that will cancel your number and you won't be able to port it to PM. Purchase a SIM and activate it and port your number over. That will close your account with Telus and they will send you a final bill. Do your research on here before activating there is a lot of good tips on what to do to help with a smooth transition.

You do not need to contact Telus first. You can activate your sim card and port over your number directly to Public Mobile. Telus will bill you accordingly by prorating the remaining days on your current plan and charge you the appropriate Contract charges.
