When anything expires with a date, I get a new at or befor that time. A credit card is sent at least a month ahead, if not more when expiring, so I update preapproved billing’s ahead of time.
Never rely on the service provider to tell you. They will tell you after the fact in most cases, but again, not always.

I don't do auto-debits/charges anywhere. Does any service (that you've let automatically take your money) tell you by email or something that "hey we tried to take your money but your card has expired"?

You should at least get at email. Then you could update your credit card info
right away.

@Davebarclay, is this prepaid plan with Public Mobile? Credit card payment is not the only option. You can use vouchers for payment as well.
