I just registered for a new plan.however I cannot activate my phone because the person who gave me the phone cannot remember the username or password.i would like to discontinue my data until I get a new phone.

There are a number of things we can try.
We can try to factory reset your phone: Android or Apple?
We can have you visit your local mall and speak to a Koodo Kiosk staff person.
How would you like to proceed?

What is the name of that phone which you do not have the password/PIN?
If it is an Android phone, you can go into the Recovery display and do the factory reset and start over again. Let me know if you need the procedure to get into the Android discovery mode.
What is the message shown on the phone when you insert your new PM SIM card?
Your phone may be locked by other provider. .

Do you mean that your friend's phone is locked to previous carrier? Your friend could call his previous carrier to get the unlock code. It should be a free service.
As stated above, Public mobile is prepaid. No refunds or pro-rated plans. Unable to pause plan until next renewal date.

@Vilma you can suspend your service in your self serve account. although I would suggest against it, since you have already prepaid and those days will count towards your cycle wether you are using the service or not.
what's the make and model of the device? and what username and password are you speaking of?

@Vilma hi I am sorry but this is a prepaid service there are no refunds you can try contacting the moderators but there are no guarantees they will refund
