I'm happy to note that you can have your phone unlocked at no charge by your provider as a result of a CRTC ruling made a few months back with an effective date of Dec 1, 2017.
I've had two phones unlocked now with no issues.
Yay!

I know! I’m so very excited. I’ve got about 6 friends who’ve been waiting to join PM because of this 😍

you need to ask your the carrier to unlock it before leaving them. or ask a friend who is using the same carrier as the locked phone to unlock it for you.
In all honesty it is benefit for iphone users as I have unlocked all my android phones on ebay for less than $5 every time.

Although this doesn't apply directly to Public Mobile since they don't sell any of their own phones, it is good for potential new customers looking to join PM. Knowing they can leave their current carrier and use the same phone without paying unlocking fees is a good note.
