24 hours that my kid's phone shows as "service disabled"

...however, service is active, as confirmed in my account info (and I double checked if my automatic payment had gone through as scheduled, on the 29th and it did). I rebooted the phone multiple times, I even removed and put back the sim card, as an extra precaution. But to no avail. It's getting frustrating.

Where are you seeing this "service disabled" message? And is the service working on the phone?

If the phone is active yet self serve is giving you that message, I wouldn't worry about it until your phone stops working especially if today is the plan renewal day.  The system gets a little funny around renewal day
