eSIM vs SIM card

Not a question, just some thoughts.

Various posters have expressed negative thoughts on eSIM's, and these are valid in their circumstances: "Don't want to spend $5 for no reason" / "May change phone soon or often" / "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

We have found that an eSIM fits our particular needs:    The phone is new, and we don't expect to change for years. The eSIM provides a bit more security if the phone is stolen.

Our main reason for eSIM is for overseas travel; just pop in a local SIM card, as we did with GiffGaff in the UK / EU.  (Many foreign providers do not give eSIM's, or at least not easily.)

Remove when finished, keep for next visit, or dump it.  Different SIM for the next continent.  No need to disturb the PM eSIM, it's there for return home.

BTW, GiffGaff (UK) actually mailed a free SIM card to me in Canada!!! And for 5 Pounds, we got 5G, a couple of GBs, unlimited calls and text, and EU roaming. My wife used Lebara; similar product, but only mails SIM to UK address.  Compare that to Telus / PM!

For free calls back to Canada from overseas, we use Fongo.

Hope this helps someone in making their choice.

Happy New Year to all Community members.

Agree with you on electric cars. 😉

Re: travel, we need coverage at the departure airport, for flight changes / boarding passes. Also, at the arrival airport for calling transport, etc. And, changing a SIM card on an aircraft in flight is not a good idea!

Anyway, it's a personal choice.

@Terryscell  I prefer physical sim because it is easy to pop out and change device with out having to pay again if it was eSIM . And seeing as public mobile won’t work over seas just Canada and the US with roaming add on . Still easy to pop out PM sim for local pre paid sim in your destination . And if you ever have to reset your device then with physical sim will still work . With eSIM you would need to rebuy one . So I’m hands down physical SIM card supporter . I was afraid when the rumours here started swirling with speculation that the iPhone 15 was going to be eSIM only as it been in the US since iPhone 14 . So eSIM is certainly the future and I don’t like it much like I don’t like electric cars either so I’ll stick with my physical sim and gasoline engines until I’m forced to have to buy into the cheaper  made money grab
