@BEER the last time I used a mac was when i was in elementary school using "all the right type" and playing a dinosaur adventure park game 😂. I don't know how Mac users do it, but I need the right click

So what is the purpose of this post ... to find out which phone models would be better options?
Planned obsolescence. The manufacturers intend for you to buy another device every 2-3 years. Some of them actually go so far as to force this upgrade/replacing by "breaking" old devices. They're not in the business of making devices you can use for a decade.
Apple was notorious for this with iPhone 3. iPhone 4. iPhone 5. iPhone 6. iPhone 7. iPhone 8. Some sort of forced iOS update - the device becomes increasingly frustrating to use without it, the device becomes increasingly frustrating to use with it.
But people are (and will be) still surprised every time it eventually happens to the newer iPhones. iPads, iMacs, etc.
Samsung Galaxies are much the same. Samsung is just more clever, less shameless.
Microsoft is doing the same with laptop PCs. Even, to a lesser extent, with desktop PCs. They seem to feel that consumers purchase disposable wares built to last only a couple years, and once the wares get too old they must be purchased again.
I expect Google devices are just as evil. Along with Huawei and all the rest. The phone factories need people to buy new phones, the evil brands need people to run new code.

Mine works fine.
It started life with Vista. There was a coupon for the then new 7 so I installed that. I don't remember anything free for 8. Then 10 came up and free and it said my computer would work so I installed that. I was expecting it to be a lousy experience but it's just fine.
Every now and again there's an update. I install those.
I have had little to no issues with the OS and my old computer. I don't notice any limitations with it. I DO notice the CPU fan sometimes pounding away. I think it's from the scanner running in the background. Or Edge seemed to take a lot of CPU just sitting there.

@BEER Those can get on my nerves too lol. I wouldn't look at Windows 8, Windows 8 was a fail as well as Vista. The layout and the way they did things are garbage.
Look at Windows 10, They've gone a long way and there aren't that many popups. Most software updates are optional now and they dont keep popping up.
Remember you also just powered on the machine thats years old so I would expect a lot of pop-ups.
Also the machine your looking at was originally from Vista so upgrading it to Windows 10 isint going to be the best experience. It will be slow and buggy.

Mine just offered to upgrade to W8.1 - perhaps it's a step to W10. Not saying that it's not a good machine or that Windows is not a good OS -- it all boils down to what one is used to and comfortable with.

I bought a top of the line HP laptop Spring 2009. The screen and case are all that's original. But parts replaced with same except SSD.
It gets all the updates that M$ keeps putting out for W10.
But Beer started this thread bemoaning his 6s.
I powered on my old 2009 HP Pavilion entertainment pc, that was sleeping in my closet for years - to my surprise it just powered on and to my additional pleasant surprise it asked if I want to upgrade from Vista to WIN 8.1 for free, and I of course did. The layout is a very positive improvement over Vista but after a few minutes of re-familiarizing with Windows it became obvious as to why I went to Mac and didn't look back. The pop ups and constant security upgrade downloads got on my nerves. Back into the closet again for this PC.

My iPhone 6s is a year older. " iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus were officially unveiled on September 9, 2015,"
However now it seems that one must have facial recognition because entering a four digit code or using the finger print seems too time consuming -- Ha -- ha -- ha
Also of interest my 91 year old mother still uses the iPhone 4s that I had given her years ago - I did switch her to the basic $10 PM plan. ($10-$2 auto-pay= $8) She just uses it for the occasional voice call and texting - and for that it's works just fine.

Dang it! How come I can't connect my 300 baud acoustic coupler to my cell phone?!
Now just force yourself to think instead of just being a trained follower -(you asked for this)- I'm not talking about legitimate updates and improvements - my post is regarding unnecessary changes under the guise of updates just to justify to those that don't understand electronic engineering why they must throw away their existing stuff and buy new ones.
About a year ago, I read that my current (refurbished) iPhone SE (2016) wouldn't work after latest updates. Today the SE works just great...I can still talk/text/ and blaze through data if I wanna. I'm not sure which SE features were lost in the "updates". I had to have battery replaced ($50). As long as it's still doing talk/text/data, I'll keep using it.
I do see many people dumping their >3 year old technology. Advertising insists we have the BEST and have it NOW. When I'm done with my phones, they're done for good.
Maybe that means I'm cheap...I just don't want to get on the tech merry-go-roiund.

@BEER big mistake buying the MacBook....
If you buy a windows laptop it will last a long time. One of mine has lasted 10 years. It needed a few battery replacements but those are only 50$. it still gets windows 10 updates to this day.
I currently use a Microsoft Surface Pro 4. I got it for free through work. They gave me one to keep as a personal device because it had a small hairline crack in the screen. Lol it was better if it was mine than in the garbage.
The 2015 Surface is still getting Windows 10 software updates to this day and it still isint considered obsolete. It has some technology that new laptops don't even have like facial recognition with Windows Hello.
My Surface only has 256GB of storage and an intel i5 with 8GB of ram. Really it works perfect for me. It can even do some light gaming. My work didn't have any i7, 16GB, 1TB SSD models.
With the money you spent on that macbook you could've got a way better laptop.
If you are looking for a premium laptop I would recommend the Dell XPS 13
If you spec out the highest build on the XPS 13 i believe its cheaper than what you paied for that MacBook.
You could also go for a Surface Pro or Surface laptop but I would currently recommend the Dell. I like the build and screen of the Dell better.
Stay away from MacBooks. There overpriced and break easily. The keyboards suck and are fragile. Also personally I prefer Windows 10 than Mac Os.

There are lots of flip phones still being sold and used. No, the really old CDMA phones are obsolete in Canada.
Your electronics recycling depot should be able to take them. I had also sent a collection of old phones to Telus. I'm sure they were delighted.
I'm pretty sure I understand your point. Maybe you're not understanding my response. Not the first time 🙂

Many here are continuing to run perfectly happily on older phones and even flip phones not giving any hoot about the latest greatest.
The march of technology has caught up to your devices on hand. You have the choice not to access your bank on your phone thereby keeping on using what you have.
Don't want to start a pissing contest but I must again state that you have definitely missed my point --- My point is that we can not keep using the devices that we already have because they become obsolete -- and yes I of course agree with you that we have choices such as for eg not to drive a car and to horse-back. -------------------------Hey are you sure one can still use flip phones with no SIM cards? I have a box with 2 old Motorola flip phones, 2 Blackberry phones and even a gen 2 and 3 Apple TV units. - Put them out in the Blue Box (recycling) a couple of years ago but they wouldn't take them - don't know what to do with them.

Yup...money. Profit. Shareholder equity/dividend/returns.
Hey, I have a Samsung S7 (still). Still does what I wish it to do. I ran a BB OS10 for a while. The security wasn't kept up due to becoming obsolete/dead. So I moved on. I would still stack it up against anything current. Alas.
I've been waiting weeks for a new mid-range Samsung to arrive. Stupid covid. I hate mail-order.

Um...this is technology.
Maybe the facial recognition was your institution.. not all.
Can we merge this thread with the one already down in the lounge?
(1) Yes this is "technology" but business trumps it. The sad thing is that most have been trained to just blindly accept this as part of the course. I'm a tekie person and like electronics but my urge to always get the latest has dwindled substantially because I see and understand that improvements that render past models obsolete are just the manufactures excuse so as to increase their sales. For example what's the improvement for Apple to drop the 32 bit app support for Catalina while all along they older OS supported 32 and 64 bit apps? The answer is that they rendered 32bit apps useless and force us to update resulting in $$$$$$$ for them.
(2) facial recognition was your institution - yes for now but doesn't signal of things to come?
