Using VOIP for long distance

Hi guys,

I often visit forums looking for advice, so I'm going to post my voip experience in case it helps anyone.

I pay for a local phone number on voip.ms that costs $0.85/month. I've been using them for years with a SIP phone adaptor for a home phone. It costs me $0.0052 / minute for outgoing calls to Canada, and $0.001 / minute outgoing to US. Incoming calls are $0.009 / minute. It's a great deal and allowed me to drop my land line.

On my cell phone I have unlimited provincial calling. I set up a second DID and my caller ID is set to my public mobile number. Now I can call out for 1/2cent to my family in another province and they call me back at my cell number.

Maybe worth checking out if you don't already have a VOIP number. BTW its a prepaid service, too, and it warns you if your balance is getting low.

Cheers!

the last 10 yrs have seen some improvements in the voip world. I have been using TextNow for a few years....for free. With it, I can call / text most any US and Cdn number from anywhere on planet Earth as long as I have a wifi signal.

Then there's WhatsApp...another great voip option. The only downside is that anyone you communicate with must also have WhatsApp installed on their device.

I know there's other free voip apps widely used...just wanted to circle back with the OP from a decade ago. I know that technology isn't standing still and we'll see other great changes in the next decade. Live long and proper ! 🖖
