@dna2016, Google Maps has navigation within the downloaded map information.  You do not require cellular data to get directions.

As I mentioned above, traffic volumes (congestion) is another issue altogether that would require a data roaming addon.

@eblicharski, unless you purchase a roaming add-on then you won't be able to use any data on your phone.  However you could download the map of where you're going directly from google maps and you can use the downloaded map without data (just download it now).  However, I don't think you'd be able to use the "direction" service without data.

In my opinion just purchase the data roaming add-on and save yourself from all the headache.  Starts at only $10 and if you only need it for the maps then that should be plenty, unless you're gone for a long time.  I went to New Orleans in the summer, purchased the $10 250MB was there for 5 days and that was plenty, was a life saver.  Last thing you want to do is get stuck with no service when you need it.  Not always fun running around looking for a wifi hotspot.

@eblicharski to be clear, there are no pay-per-use features at Public Mobile, and that includes no pay-per-use roaming.  This means that unlike with other providers you've used in the past, if you go into the USA without getting any (pre-purchased) add-ons, you will get no services whatsoever with the exception of you will be able to receive incoming text messages.  You won't be able to reply to them, you won't be able to make or receive calls (incoming calls will go right to your voicemail), and you won't be able to use any mobile data.  Thus, there are no surprise bills afterward.

If you want to make/receive calls and/or send texts and/or use mobile data (such as for navigating), you will need to purchase 1 or more "US Roaming" add-ons (or there are two bundles).  For more info, please see this knowledge base article:  https://productioncommunity.publicmobile.ca/t5/Knowledge-Base/U-S-Roaming/ta-p/307883.  For how to purchase add-ons, please see my guide here:  https://productioncommunity.publicmobile.ca/t5/Plans-Add-Ons/HOWTO-Purchasing-Add-ons/m-p/198974#M22...

You can download your Google Maps for the area you're travelling in, and not worry about any data charges (that you would need to purchase first).  Driving directions will still work.

If you're concerned about traffic volume updates - the roaming data packages are available.

There are no charges if you don't prepay.

There are roaming add-ons available so that you can use your phone/number in the states.
