1. Keep your old line/number/plan/account active on your previous wireless carrier
2. Change your account to prepaid (if not so already - this extends the time available to test PM without incurring additional costs. Most wireless carriers will suspend your account/number for up to 90 days before removing it from their system/offering it to someone else)
3. If you are still midway in the cycle during the switch to PM, forward all calls to your PM mobile. Also helps to notify all significant others/important contacts that you have a new number.
4. Try to switch during a PM promo i.e. free sim and $0 for your next bill. Don't forget about existing rewards like the refer a friend reward, autopay etc.

I think he was meaning generally speaking...not specifically the last one. Promos like that come up somewhat frequently.
