Porting time

Hi all,

My wife and I both joined Public Mobile a couple hours ago. She was previously with Koodo and me with Telus. Her port went through no more than 30 minutes after joining but my phone still hasnt lost service with Telus. I am wondering how long a cell number port can take. I guess I'm wondering how long to wait before I contact support about it?

Thanks!

MNP registration in Canada should take about 10-20 minutes.

Compared to USA which usually takes over 2 hours.  And many other countries where it occurs after up to 10 (or even up to 30) days.

Although it probably takes a full business day or so before all the network-side directories and stuff have been updated/synced with MNP changes - a lot of places update stuff overnight - and until then there might be system "glitches".

And it's hard to assess exactly when the PM rep has entered the MNP (or even to know if it's been done at all!) because you're not interacting with them directly in real-time, as you would when getting support from a rep in a store/kiosk, voice call, or webchat.

The overnight fix of glitches might partially explain cases in which a number port has reportedly been full completed, and even both carrier's databases will say that the phone number has been full transfered, but calls or texts originating from some carriers don't get routed properly. Some of the time, these prolblems do seem to fix themselves after a few days.

Ported 2 lines today, April 2 2018 ($30 promo plan)

Port from Freedom done in store and was instant

Port from Koodoo could not be done in store according to the rep's screen. Could do it in the account at home, and was instant.

I checked again after posting and the port had been completed. Go figure! Thanks for the quick reply!

In theory, a port could take any amount of time.  One of the telecom associations (CWTA) says that all wireless carriers should be aiming to have  a phone number trransfered within "2.5 business hours" if the number is coming from another wireless carrier.  That doesn't mean that it can't take as little as 2 seconds or as much as a few days.  At one point, another carrier (Wind Mobile) always took exactly 3.5 hours for every number port.    In most cases, it takes less than a few hours
