I just ported my number from Telus using the self help menu at Public Mobile, took ~30 seconds and it works fine. Im wondering now do I have to call Telus and cancel my account, or is that automatically done since my number is now with Public Mobile.?

I just ported from TELUS today. Was super fast and seamless. I got an email from TELUS almost instantly with the "We're sorry to see you go" message.

30 seconds later when your port was completed, you probalby had an email waiting in your inbox from Telus saying "Sorry to see you go". Or at least, that was my experience. My port was also virtually instant, about the same as yours. This was just shy of 3 months ago.

It does cancel as soon as the port completes.

As long as i know, when you port your number, it automatically gets canceled. But just to make sure, you can call them.
