Over 8GB disappeared

I've been checking my usage regularly, and was well below my 12GB limit. Then all of a sudden I got a warning I was 75% then shortly after 95%. I checked my account online and it shows 8400MB used on the 23rd, but I have no idea how or why that happened. Is there any chance I can get that back? My plan isn't up for renewal until Jan 27th and I'm almost out of data. I can't afford to spend $30 on a measly 1GB add-on.

@Vickel Just shy of $400 in overages to be exact (dependant on base plan of course, I assumed 1GB/mth)

As bad as it is right now...........just be happy you weren't on a 30day plans with Koodo/Fido/etc.

Their $5/100mb overage fees would have cost you a small fortune.

+1 that would have been 1 massive bill

I used to be with Wind mobile and never had usage shock with tethering.  Upon switching to Public Mobile, I have only tethered to a laptop twice and both times, I consumed 500 megs within a blink of an eye.  My lesson learned is to identify the connection as limited in Windows and turn off LTE to slow things down just in case.

Do your phone and Mac use the same apple id?  I thought the Mac had enough sense to not install updates when connected via a personal hotspot.  At least that's been my experience.

I recommend downloading my download manager.  It's free in the App Store. You can set alarms, so you'll know if you've gone over your daily allowance or hit specific targets that you specify.  Although it won't change the past, it can help you avoid future problems.  I hope you find this useful.

That really sucks that you forgot to turn off tethering and to switch over to wifi on your mac. Well, you always learn your lesson this way....Good news is that your renewal is not far away. Keep your data usage to email or browsing and avoid videos for time being. Or if you can't, simply buy an add-on.

I usually just check my phone. this is the first time I used it for tethering.

That does suck.  Do you use my data manager or a similar app to track your usage or do you just check your data is iOS settings?

Each show was only like 250-450MB and it was only a few. Def not 8GB.

Wifi assist is turned off. It was my stupid computer.

Ok I checked my phone, it was when I was teetering. My computer must've been downloading an update, even though I have auto update AND download turned off.. but it's a Mac and Apple constantly changes settings with every update so it's possible it got turned back on somehow.

This sucks. 😞

Streaming video even in SD will definitely add up too.

Do you have wi-fi assist enabled?

iPhone 5s, running 10.2. I'm not sure if maybe it was a rogue app, or if something was running in the background when I wasn't using my phone or what... but it's highly unusual, especially since I rarely use data heavy apps.

I was using it for tethering for a little while when the internet when down in my place, but I only used it to stream a few shows, none of which were in HD (not Netflix, I know how much data that uses and avoid it because of that).

Its possible to track this usage from your phone settings. See what apps used that much of data. Restrict those apps to not use any data.

If there is an error from Public Mobile side, they might adjust it for you. Send private message to one of the mod with details.

Worst case, you will have to buy an add-on if they can't adjust your data usage.
