International calls not working

HMBF

Hello, my incoming international calls are going straight to voicemail. Please check and enable VoLTE and proper call routing on my line.

1. Confirm Public Mobile Supports VoLTE on Your Phone

Public Mobile uses the same network as Telus. VoLTE is required for some call routing to work correctly, especially with 4G/LTE.

Check phone compatibility:

  • iPhones: iPhone 6 and newer generally support VoLTE
  • Android: Most newer phones support VoLTE but settings differ by manufacturer

2. Turn On VoLTE on Your Phone

On iPhone

  1. Settings → Cellular
  2. Tap Cellular Data Options
  3. Turn on Enable LTE
  4. Choose Voice & Data

On Android (varies by model)

  1. Settings → Network & Internet (or Connections)
  2. Mobile Network
  3. Toggle VoLTE / Enhanced 4G LTE Mode
  4. If there’s a Wi-Fi Calling option, enable it too

3. Check Your Public Mobile Plan & SIM

  • VoLTE must be supported on your current plan
  • Older SIM cards may not support VoLTE — consider a VoLTE-ready SIM
  • You may need a new SIM if yours is older than ~3–4 years

Ask Public Mobile support if your SIM is VoLTE-capable.

4. Check Call Forwarding / Do Not Disturb

International incoming calls going to voicemail can happen if call forwarding or DND is active.

Check on iPhone

  1. Settings → Phone
  2. Call Forwarding → OFF
  3. Silence Unknown Callers → OFF (temporarily)

Check on Android

  1. Phone App → Settings
  2. Supplementary Services
  3. Disable Call Forwarding / DND

5. Test With Another SIM or Phone

To isolate:

  • Put your SIM in another phone
  • Or test another Public Mobile SIM in your phone

If calls still go to voicemail, it’s likely an account or network setting.

What is the make and model of your phone? You will need to check yourself and enter the IMEI of your phone to see if it is VoLTE compatible.

If it is compatible, calls should go through when it is set on LTE. If it still not connecting, check to see if you blocked contact on your phone. Contact a CS_Agent to investigate your issue if it still goes to VM. Click on the Chat icon and type in “Submit a Ticket” then Contact.

It's true that a device supporting VoLTE or not can influence the reliability of phone calls.  However, not having VoLTE wouldn't make it so that only incoming international calls are an issue.
