Data completely stopped working twice, both after using Communauto carshare in Toronto.

I have had a weird issue happen to me twice now. I have used my data to unlock a car to use in Toronto, I made my journey and ended the trip everything was fine. I finish my errand a couple of hours later and then both times my data has been totally bricked and stuck on the other side of the city with no means of getting home except walking. The first time it happened back in June I had to restore my iphone from a backup and that seemed to fix it, it happened again today and had to walk 1hr30mins home in 30ºc. Any idea why my data would just stop working. The first time I thought it was a fluke, but the fact it has happened again after using the car share suggests there is a link.

Any ideas?

Thanks

@rtnewman

this also happens to me from time to time. it's a signal issue.. best thing to try is to switching to HSPA(3g) or toggling airplane mode off/on.

@rtnewman ,

It is hard to know for sure until you try some things then use the app again and see if it fails.

I would start with uninstalling the app. Then reinstalling it.

When you are out and about and you lose Data connection, try toggling into airplane mode for a minute, than back to regular mode. This helps reset your network connection.

Hopefully, you get a chance to use it again soon, and see what happens.

If would be nice if someone else who has used this app could share their experience...anyone?

That's a great observation, and these quick discoveries can often help the App developer make quick fixes.  However, if it's only happened twice and they're unwilling to be proactive, I'm skeptical how much troubleshooting we can do to "fix" this problem.  I'd recommend using Communauto many, many more times to see what happens!!! 😅 (joking)

I don't use it frequently - the last time I used it before today was in June and my data stopped working then too. But then and today are the only two occasions my data has stopped, because it only been the two time it's really hard to say if it is a total coincidence or causally linked. It could well be just really bad luck, but I am inclined to think there is a link somehow

That's too bad they're helping much.  How often do you use Communauto?  If it happened 2x out of 500x for example, then it's a strange but limited problem.  I'm assuming the Communauto app has been updated?

I've tried all of the usual 'fixes' but nothing seems to work unfortunately!

@rtnewman

you can only reset network settings on an IPhone, not everything at your device,

I get absolutely zilch, 'searching' for a moment and then just 'No Service'.

I've contacted Communauto to see what they have to say about it, but it is extremely frustrating. Yes, the only two times it has happened has been when I've used the app.

I don't really want to have to restore my phone again, but it looks like that might be the solution.

@rtnewman

What if you reboot your phone, flip airplane mode on/off, etc?  Do you get any data back?

If it's a pattern that happens only after using the Communauto app, I'm wondering if there's a bug in that app that's messing up your phone.  In addition to troubleshooting here, I would reach out to Communauto as well and ask what's going on.
