They are not losing money, they just aren't making AS MUCH profit. They don't spend money on call centres and support staff.

I ported my number from Koodo just last week with no issues, using the automated activiation/signup process. How far did you get in this process?

what is the prefix on the number - for example is it a 1-888 or 1-866 number?

The promo plan will cover long distance within the province so from 905 you can call any other area code within Ontario. You only need to dial the 10 digits, no need for the +1 prefix.
