Hello.
My son lost his Iphone6. I have an old Iphone 5s which I can give him. Since he will need a new SIM card I am wondering if I can use a SIM card from another company or if I absolutely need a Public Mobile SIM card? Also, once we get the new SIM card what is the procedure to add the new SIM code in order to keep his old phone number?
Thank you.

I want to stay with Public Mobile but I was wondering if I could buy a SIM card from another phone provider. That way I would not have to wait for the card to come in the mail.
Since then, I found an alternative way to get a PM SIM card. They now sell them at Walmart.
Thanks to everyone for their help.
@Filou, when going into Walmart make sure that you say you only need the sim because you have lost a phone. Walmart is known for not wanting to sell just the sim cards. Make sure that you explain you already have a PM account but just need the SIM.

@srlawren wrote:@Carld123 @Anonymous I'm pretty sure @Filou wants to keep using PM but was wondering if they could use a SIM from Koodo or Telus, since they are the same company and run on the same network. Filou if that's right, then @Anonymous's original response is correct, you need a Public Mobile SIM to use the Public Mobile service.
I will add that once a number has been ported out of an account, the sim & account will be cancelled and the sim will no longer work. Just in case you were attempting to use an old sim from a provider that is no longer active.

@Anonymous wrote:@Carld123: Funny. I interpreted the OP as wanting to stay here.
@Filou: Sure. You could get a SIM from elsewhere, activate it there with a plan and then port the number from here to there thereby keeping the number.
@Anonymous
Could go either way but after reading again I think your take on it is correct...both scenarios covered anyhow..😀

You can choose any provider you wish...if you get a new public mobile sim..and still have access to the self serve..you can change the sim card number and keep the existing pm number associated with the account.

You absolutely need a Public Mobile SIM card.
The self-serve has a Change SIM Card tab under Plan & Add-ons where you can enter in your new SIM #.
You might want to use the lost/stolen feature first though.
