Refer-a-Friend number change after porting.

Good morning.

I am just inthe process of becoming a new PM customer.  I am looking to sign up on the $40/4.5GB plan andonce that process is up and running I will port my old number over.

I also have 2 friends I'd like to refer to this limited time offer.  However, I would have to give them my new PM phone number which will later be changed once I port.  How can I set it up so that i do not lose the reward once my existing number ports in?

Many thanks.

Thanks everyone!  Lots of great information here.  Was wondering about the multiple accounts in the same family on the same credit card and address.  Smiles.

Again, kudos to all of you!

Hello all,

I've had an issue with activating a new number, porting in my number active full service is completed, and then a friend used my 'port in' number to register the next day.

He was unable to use my port in number, as it wasn't yet 'a PM' number.

I do not know how the system updates, however, I did have to get a moderator to create a ticket to get my port in number assigned as a PM number.

Long story short, it works properly now for me, but I don't get any referrals now as my friend completed the sign-up without being able to successfully include the referral.

By my thinking, doing the port in after full-service activation is a good choice, but a friend referral will need to either use the temporary number for a very new account or wait a few days (a week?) for a port in number to be used.

Just my $0.02 worth.

I will share my experiences and recommendations with number porting.  Depending on the sending carrier, the porting can be really short or protracted.  If it is within the Telus family, the porting is immediate.  If from other carriers, typical completion time is within 30 minutes.  In some instances with Bhell, it can take 48 hours.  Selected Bell customers receive calls from their customer service prior to number release.  Given the variability of porting time and the potential for activation issues, I would invariably recommend all customers to activate to a temporary number so that the new account is fully functional immediately and without interruption to the use of the old number by delays in porting.  Upon successful activation, the number port can be requested.

With respect to impact on referrals, there should be none by using the recommended two step process.  Give both numbers to the friend.  Prior to activation, the friend should attempt to make a phone call to the temporary number.  If the temporary number no longer works, use the ported number for referral.  If the temporary number still works, use it for referral.

I welcome feedback if any of this does not make sense.

@mrandmrsrusso  I just want to echo @ShawnC13 comments about being a bussiness line.  Often you will see posts with issues  sno service often due to  autopayment failures. ( how common and how often they occur is unknown ).  so in case of a autopayment failure your service will be not work until mods can fix it.

work arounds to avoid this issue tend to be manually topping up a couple days before renewal or asking mods to renew the plan early.

if your service does become suspended then you can only wait for mods to fix the issue.

also if you need an invoice/ receipt i reccomed buying vouchers from shell or 7-11 and using those if possible. otherwise you will need to formally ask for an invoice see details here:https://productioncommunity.publicmobile.ca/t5/Discussions/Invoice-Request/m-p/174070#M52476

@mrandmrsrusso Just be accurate when setting up the account. I stole this information that was posted earlier today by @will13am in another thread (I hope that's ok @will13am). Just some things to watch out for:

From will13am:

"It seems like entering credit card information can be beyond challenging for some customer accounts.  Personally, the only difficulties I have ever had adding a credit card was when I added the same card for a third account.  The work around was to add a different card and then switch back a couple of days later.  Tracking issues reported by others, it seems like address entry can cause problems.  Apartment number should be left blank.  The postal code entry should have no spaces.  One weird address problem experienced by a colleague was due to a different address for the account and the credit card.  Once the account address was changed, the credit card was accepted."

Hey Shawn.

I had two ports one from Bell to Telus and one from Chatr to Koodo that did not go so well.  One went 48 hours without service.  Hence my give a new account a day or two before porting in.  As for PM being a total online experience with support, etc. another reason for getting up an running just right before making the full leap.  Once up, I've only heard good things about PM so am confident we'll have a happy marriage.  I don't see a reason for constant change or support, fingers crossed.

Thanks GreatCanadian for your reply.

I'd love it to go as smoothly.  So appreciate the confidence boost on the port-in experience.  Definitely feel better knowing your experiences.

Perhaps I'll just give it a go tomorrow evening and then share my ported in number with them and save all the hassles.  Fingers crossed the offer stays online thru the weekend for them, and me.  Smiles.

It seems as though issues can arise when porting from Koodo, but I have never ported from Koodo, so can't speak directly to that. But I have ported at least 15 numbers (setting up friends' accounts) from other providers, and have yet to encounter an issue. All numbers were ported on activation, and never took more than a couple of minutes. More like 30 seconds. My experience seems to mirror @ShawnC13's.

Hi Shawn, thanks for your quick reply.

Yes, Id like them to get in on the $40/4.5GB before it's gone.

As for porting in, I use my current number for business and have had some issue porting in the past.  Hence, I like for a day or two to pass to make sure the account is just right before porting in.  Plus, this long weekend is a good time for an outage while this all happens.

There still should be no issue because they have to use your number to be referred that is what associates it with the account in the first place.  So a number change after the fact won't have an impact as once they signed up they are linked to your account.  Now I am a huge believer in PM but just a heads up because you mention that you use this line for business.  Are you prepared if there is an issue with your service that it could day  hours-days to get it back up and running.  Just want to make sure that you are aware sometimes issues can take multiple days where the person will have no service.  It is very rare but because you mentioned this was a business line want to make you aware of it.

It will then be associated with your account and not the phone number.  Are they planning to set up their account before you port your number in?  I am not sure why so many people setup an account with a new number thenport in I have had no troubles with doing both at the same time with all the accounts I have brought over
