I'd like to suggest that the person getting reffered get's a reward too. Most referral systems I know of for mobile service give both the referrer and the referree a bonus. Now I don't think it has to be $1 per month indefinitely, like for the referrer. But perhaps a one time credit of around $10+ to go towards your first 10,30, or 90 day payment. Or maybe a welcome bonus of one of the addons like free 200Mb addon, or free 400 mins long distance. Kind of an incentive for your friend or family member to try out Public Mobile. It will also help incentivize the person to remember to fill in the referrers phone number, in case they forget. Would not be nice to refer someone to PM and then miss out on the reward because your friend forgot to mention it when activating the line.

I agree.  Incentives on both sides help.

Fantastic idea. I know there are already auto-renewal rewards, but when I signed up with Koodo I got a 100 Minute long distance booster for adding my credit card. This leads me to believe that PM can offer similar "one off" boosters (ie. things that aren't even available for purchase) because they share the same system as Koodo afterall. So maybe something like "Tell us who referred you and we'll give you 100 minutes of long distance".

Harder to give new client referral credits than existing one. But maybe a small cherry ($5 off a 90 plan?)

Hey @Mixam,

Our team is currently working on redesigning our referral program. As part of this, we're evaluating offering a reward to the new customer who has been referred to join Public Mobile.

@Igor_M - this is good to hear!

A summarized comparison of current offerings:

(All define upper limits for number of referrals per month/year/lifetime, discount per month/year/lifetime, etc)

TELUS Mobility Refer a Friend - you get one-time $50 or $100 credit if friend hooks up Telus TV/Optik/Internet/Phone bundles, friend gets (small) discounts on 2-/3-year Telus contract

Koodo Mobile - you and friend both get one-time $25 credit

Public Mobile Refer-a-Friend Reward - you get $1 discount each month friend remains, friend gets nothing

Bell Canada Referral Program - you apparently get one-time $25 credit (cryptic legalese)

Virgin Mobile Refer A Friend - officially discontinued, but you and friend both get random coupons and gift cards

Rogers Wireless Refer Your Friend - you get one-time $25 credit, friend gets nothing

Fido Refer a Friend - you and friend both get one-time $25 credit

WIND Mobile Refer-A-Friend - you and friend both get one-time $20 credit (limited time offer)

ChatrMTS Mobility, Freedom Mobile - no official rewards or referral systems in place

Before anyone jumps on this (because $25 is of course far better than $1), consider that PM's rewards are ongoing payouts which last indefinitely while other rewards are typically one-time payouts.  Yes, your friend would need to stay with PM for 25 months before you "break even" with the competition.  But you and your friend both benefit from PM's plans, pricing, and other rewards.  An honest comparison between carriers must honestly consider all the parameters, isolating the focus onto just their referral rewards isn't very meaningful in itself.

I agree that motivating (bribing) people would be a good way to increase PM's number of users.  Especially since many people haven't heard of PM - it's completely unknown, they're nervous about joining a small-time or start-up carrier which might get disbanded or bankrupted or swallowed in a short time, they're worried about service reliability and billing and all the rest and they simply don't recognize, trust, or have any confidence in the PM "brand".

I suggest automatically offering the "10-day Pass" basic talk/text plan on all new subscriptions.  This would assure Activation and Number Porting issues get resolved in a timely fashion (and that more of those PM SIM cards get used), and it would serve as a working demonstration of PM's service quality/reliability to remove all doubts.  PM keeps saying that things are a bit different when there's a "little skin in the game" - and this is true - but it works both ways.  I think it's wiser to not demand a fully prepaid investment when trying to sell your (unproven) product, a $5 SIM card which offers a free 10-day trial is very attractive but a $120 gamble which could somehow "mess up" or "break" your phone service for 90-days is something dubious that a lot of people will walk away from.  And people easily get angered, frustrated, rude, and demanding when they feel ripped-off - but they tend to be a whole lot more patient, polite, reasonable, and communicative when trying to score something good for "free".

@Korth ???

Wind & Freedom are same company so how do they have different refer rewards?

Freedom is normally 1 time $10 credit for both

Current promo is 1 time $20 credit for both

@kav2001c - it looks like you're right, Wind Mobile and Freedom Mobile are now the same Shaw-owned company?

The Wikipedia pages I read about Wind/Freedom weren't consistent.  And as you point out, the Wind and Freedom websites (the ones which are online, anyhow) are themselves inconsistent.  I think maybe it's a "recent" corporate acquisition/merging/reorganization and they haven't finished sorting things out yet.

My understanding is that Wind normally gives you $10 credit for a referral, and normally gives all new (referred or random) members an automatic $10 credit for signing up.  But they're currently running a "Limited-time promotional offer from October 1, 2016 - January 31, 2017" which changes the details.

The WIND to Freedom thing is nothing more than a name change. It's one company, one website -business as normal. The company is simply now doing business as a different brand. I haven't seen anything official as to whether Shaw has changed official corporate name for the former WIND Mobile, but in Canada and from a customer perspective, the WIND name is now dead and no longer in use.

@computergeek541 oh we are all sure Shaw is going 2 tier. Build out the flanker network under Freedom name, then when stable, launch Shaw Wireless as premium brand and allow things like bundling
