difficulty setting up an account to access my account number to transfer to another provider

I purchase it from Walmart

At Public mobile but when I try to enter my number it said the number not valid

That's not an option.  It's only delivered by SMS. Where is your phone number now?  At Public Mobile, or somewhere else?

not possible.  the 6 digit code is to ensure the number you are creatinng the account for is your own.

Are you bringing a phone number here, or sending it somewhere else?

You will need to register, activate with a code sent to you by SMS

 indicated my phone number is invalid or I have set up an account already...

@farrellm1  You want to transfer your public mobile phone number to another provider? Do you not have a self serve? Is the line active? Who set it up? Did you forget your password? What's the issue you're having?  Failure to log in, forget password?  Do you have a self-service account?
