my add on of talk and text in the U.S. didn't work but I was charged anyway

The 10 Day US Talk & Text add-on will only work while you're in US.

Log into My Account...do you see your $$ sitting in Available Funds ?

Add-ons are a two-step process.  Do you see the amount of the addon sitting in your Available Funds in your account?
